THE ANSWER:
The three letters are “PEN.” The proper names are Pena, Penrod, Pennine, Penrose, and Penelope.
But I’ve only heard of one of those names! I immediately thought PEN and dismissed it. Has anyone heard of a Penrod before? OY!
On a lighter note, I’m not really mad, just upset that I didn’t stick with my original answer. :O)

the give-a-way was the last one, elope. But I didn’t know penrod was a legitimate proper name. Or Pennine for that matter.

If you’ve never heard of Penrod, pick up a copy of the book the next time you’re at the library. It’s worth a gander.

Penrod, as in Booth Tarkington’s novel, or Penrod Day, an Indianapolis Arts Festival in the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood which takes its name (the day, that is) from it’s association with Tarkington. Yay Hoosiers!
