i've seen many people try to copy rothko - some serious and some for fun to hang in their houses...and they are nowhere near the genius of a rothko. i have had emotional responses to his paintings where i've cried because of their intensity. it's really such a beautiful and amazing experience.

thanks for writing this post - loved it!

If any of you watch Mad Men, Rothko was just featured in one of the episodes! Love his work.

And really, I don't think that anyone can paint like Rothko. The emotions he expresses are common in everyone, but people would be surprised how hard it is to take a few elementary colors and use them to express feeling and depth.

People who think anyone can do modern art should try it themselves some time.

For a really interesting exploration of Rothko's effect on people (particularly the Rothko Chapel), check out the book
"Pictures and Tears" by James Elkins. The book touches on much more than Rothko, focusing on the emotional response people have had to art.

Thank you! I'm so glad you put in his idea of basic expression of emotion as opposed to definition of form. Emotion holds no form and is only an expression of light that he reflected on a canvas. Any person can do it, he just did it. That's the inherent beauty of it for me. It's his expression of his emotions in their purest form.

The Rothko Chapel in Houston is an amazing experience. Anyone that has the chance to to go really should. It's so very serene - the exact opposite of his mind. Plus, the Menil Collection is nearby and you can view some more Rothko and a Dan Flavin permanent installation; not to mention a brilliant rotation of other works of modern art.
