The products gracing the pages of the SkyMall Magazine provide guaranteed laughter, disbelief and audible exclamations of “Who would buy that?” In each question in today’s quiz, one product is actually for sale in SkyMall Magazine; the other is an invention that failed to secure a patent. Can you tell the difference?

Take the Quiz: Actual Skymall Product or Rejected Invention Patent?

  1. Excellent quiz! But why would anyone buy a slanket? Can’t you just put on a sweater?

  2. Are you crazy, Jenn? They’d have to remove themselves from a screen for at least two minutes to do that. Not to mention the added time of putting on socks, too.

  3. My first 100%. I’m so proud! On our last flight, my kids and I made a game of selecting the wackiest skymall item in the catalog. There were a lot of excellent choices.

  4. I don’t know if I have a slight case of dyslexia or not… However, I kept reading “slanket” as “skanklet”… As a product name, that opens whole new fields to the imagination…
(I got 7 out of 8. Maybe I’ve been spending too much time on a plane without a current issue of Mental Floss magazine?)

  5. i just can’t believe I got 100%. I definitely need to be sure I take a good book on my next flight.

    Now I want a Dough-Nu-Matic, though. that’d be awesome!

  6. Scary enough I remember reading some of these adds. The cat box and the hot dog machine for sure. I am surprised at the poop freeze, but dumb inventions like that make people rich all day long.

  7. I got 100%. I remembered seeing a few of these products before, but in the other cases I found I could pick out the Skymall product from the breathlessly goofy writing style.

    reCAPTCHA: “slightly sixty”

  8. 100!

And I didn’t even read the Skymall on my last flight

  9. Yeah..I got a slanket from my grandmother for Christmas a couple years ago. It stayed in the wrapping till we sold it at a yard sale before my parents moved. I hope whoever boguht it is enjoying it.

  10. Yay 100% and I haven’t even been on a plane in 3 years. Anyway now I have to go buy the hot dog thingy and the slanket.

  11. 100% but then I travel 50% of the time and always look at the Skymall magazine for fun. I have seen the slanket, hot dog machine, kitty litter holder, doughnut machine, and the shot chiller. They are all currently available for purchase as of the Summer 2008 catalog. Good quiz!

  12. A little scared that I got 100% on this, but as Scott commented above, SkyMall’s catalog copy does have a distinctive voice that makes it easier to pick out the real from the fakes.

  13. 100% as well. I love to look through the SkyMall catalog just to see what crazy things are in there.

Recaptcha: Thinking United- Too weird because the last flight I took was on United a few weeks ago.

  14. Some of the “wrong” answers (like the Rolled Paper Hat) are from a book on “chindogu,” joke Japanese inventions. Look up the word on Wikipedia or Amazon to find out more about it/the book (its subtitle is something like “101 Unuseful Inventions”).

  15. Not bad – and embarrassing though it may be, I actually owned the hot dog grill. In my defense, though, it was a cheap knock-off of the SkyMall version. It actually did an OK job of heating up hot dogs, but sanity eventually prevailed and I reclaimed that little portion of my scarce counter space.

Hey! I have an election-year reCaptcha:

    Goldwater Yet?

  16. I really wanted the foam gun to be real. :(

  17. 100%! I love SkyMall!
