First of all, Saginaw, where I was born and lived until just a few years ago, is a terrible city. Extremely high crime rates for one thing, and few neighborhoods have houses worth more than $40,000. Very few. For comparison, Saginaw Township, bordering on the city, has many neighborhoods where the base price is $200,000, and other surrounding townships have homes worth a million dollars or more. No person in his or her right mind would want to live in that city. But beyond the fact that even the "best" neighborhoods in Saginaw are utter crap, the neighborhood that particular house is in is one of the worst. I've been annoyed these last few days with the coverage of this story; news services and reporters, mostly people who have never been to Scaginaw, as it is often non-affectionately called by its residents, seem absolutely amazed (and a bit envious?) that someone could land such an "amazing" deal. If they knew the area, they wouldn't be amazed at all--this would be a non-story. Houses in that area are routinely abandoned, occupied by squatters and drug-dealers, and are frequently home to meth labs. That woman wasted her $1.75 (and whatever else she sinks into that piece of junk). The house, and most of the houses surrounding it, is worth ZERO.
