I worked for many years at the Bay Area Renaissance Festival in Largo, FL. The site was a former landfill, and we found all kinds of things coming up through the dirt -- car bumpers, bed springs etc. That show also had a higher incidence of respiratory illnesses among the cast than any other show I did. The dirt was actually toxic!

While doing research for work, it was discovered that all former Meadowlands of NJ were filled in using garbage. So NJ pretty much is one gigantic landfill! (At least in the Northern Half)

Also of note, there were 2 big reasons why they filled in the Wetlands to begin with. One was Moquito breeding. They couldn't treat the meadows fast enough to prevent the mosquitoes from reproducing. The other was for Industrial Development to be able to compete with the NY Harbors.

While not stadiums, here in Cleveland we have an airport and shopping centers built on trash...They recently had to close a Wal-Mart built on a landfill due to the unsafe working conditions siting structural and electrical problems and methane gases....There is a grocery store in the same plaza!!!

Interesting post. I'd be interested in hearing more about how landfills operate. A friend's mother oversees all the landfills/trash operations in one Florida county and has been to conventions around the country and world presenting papers. Trash is a big industry.
