This is absolutely devestating. I'm so upset for these people and their families. I really want to read The Diving Bell and the Butterfly now, too.

@PartiallyDeflected:

While the Terry Schiavo case was indeed a sad tale, it was later found in her autopsy that she HAD suffered severe brain damage. From her Wikipedia page: "Examination of Schiavo’s nervous system by neuropathologist Stephen J. Nelson, M.D., revealed extensive injury. The brain itself weighed only 615 g, only half the weight expected for a female of her age, height, and weight, an effect caused by the loss of a massive amount of neurons. Microscopic examination revealed extensive damage to nearly all brain regions, including the cerebral cortex, the thalami, the basal ganglia, the hippocampus, the cerebellum, and the midbrain."

Hiccups = brain tumor? Oh crap, I'm in trouble.

But in other news, the movie The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is marvelous and beautiful. Anyone out there who hasn't seen it: rent it. It's breathtaking.

Kind of reminds me of the Terry Schiavo case from a few years ago. The husband (who already had a new girlfriend) said she was brain dead, while her parents insisted that she was alive beause she could follow objects with her eyes.

Oh my. The timing of this is unreal for me. My husband's friend died of ALS this morning. Fortunately, he had a wonderfully supporting family and the means to aquire some of this technology. He was able to communicate for much longer than otherwise would have been expected. He used this time to working tirelessly to raise money for his cause. He will be missed by a great many people.
