I was once nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature shortly after college. I didn't win, but it sure was awesome to be nominated. I put it on all my resumes. I've gotten some sweet job deals out of it. Go ahead and look up my nomination and verify it. Go on. Do it.

The last bit is interesting, that Nobel explicitly said there should not be consideration of nationality. The Literature academy seems to be much biased against Americans.

A story on the subject:

The arafat debacle does speak to how little the peace prize is based on merit of any kind. Disgusting.

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize isn't a Nobel Prize. There's some fuzziness about the awarding of the prize, but it's not part of the will so it isn't a Nobel Prize. His heirs have said as much but can't really stop the blurring of the lines

I guess you could add me to the list of people who turned down Nobel Prizes.

Back in my first year in college, I got a call about 3 A.M. in the morning. The person on the other end asked my name to make sure, and then stated that they were calling to tell me I'd won that year's Nobel Prize in chemistry! (I dabbled in chemistry as a hobby at the time, but nothing that would qualify me for a Nobel Prize.)

I figured it was some of my buddies, aware of my hobby, playing a joke on me. I said, "Gee, thanks for the honor, but I'm not worthy. However, it's 3 A.M. here, and I really need my sleep." I then hung up.

I didn't even think anything of it until 3 days later. I was reading the paper, and saw someone with the same name as me in a headline. Reading the story, it turns out that this person, who lived, in the same area as me, won that year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry!

The wrong number was even briefly mentioned in the news story!

So near, yet so far.

My sister is in the midst of a messy divorce, and her soon-to-be ex is a physics professor. Maybe she should add in that "I get your prize money" clause. That will drive him crazy. He will obviously never win the nobel prize, but i bet he thinks he's got a chance.
