Brain Game: As You Like It

I was recently discussing the life of Shakespeare with my friend John, a college English instructor who recently organized a student trip to Stratford, Ontario, to see one of the Bard’s plays. One of the topics we discussed was the idea that there might still be an undiscovered Shakespeare text out there somewhere. Uncertain what the title of such a work might be, I decided to come up with some anagrams of the titles of existing Shakespeare works in order to “invent” my own. Can you decipher these five into their original titles?

FEATHERWEIGHT MONTHS
HENCEFORTH ACTIVE MEN
MERMAID’S HUMID GARMENTS
THE TWELVE-GNOME AFTERNOON
THOU BADMINTON GAUCHO

HERE are the answers.

  1. Very nice — proud to say I didn’t look at the list of Shakespeare works either :) Though, from memory, it took awhile to get #5!

    1. The Taming of the Shrew
    2. The Merchant of Venice
    3. A Midsummer Night’s Dream
    4. The Two Gentlemen of Verona
    5. Much Ado About Nothing

    Good game!

  2. Got it…..although the last two were pretty tough going from memory, so that is what the internet is for.

  3. got them all – but had to list all the shakespeare i could think of on paper first. there’s just no way i could do it in my head.

  4. The Taming of the Shrew
    The Merchant of Venice
    A Midsummer Night’s Dream
    The Two Gentlemen of Verona
    Much Ado About Nothing

  5. I resisted the temptation to grab my book of his complete works – and went by memory – focusing on all the “long titled” plays.
For some reason #3 took the longest for me – you’d think that would be one of the first to come to mind.

  6. I live about 25 miles outside of Stratford, and if anyone else is even remotely in the area and under 30, check out Stratford’s PlayOn program, whereby tickets to certain shows can be had for $20 or $30. Thoroughly worth the trip.

  7. I would SO get front row tickets to a play called The Twelve-Gnome Afternoon!
