I never thought I’d say this, but I saw something amusing in an airline magazine recently and wanted to share — a list of American cities named after various animals, ranging from the obvious (Buffalo, New York) to the obscure (Fly, Ohio). If you know some that weren’t in the article, feel free to add them in the comments…
The article also notes that there are no towns or cities called Bear (not including Bear River, Bear Mountain and so on), and that “the most popular place name for towns, as well as rivers, creeks, and mountains, is Beaver.” There’s definitely a joke in there somewhere, and we’re definitely not gonna make it.

There is a Bear, DE, but I’m not sure if it actually qualifies as a city.

There’s a Fishkill in New York. PETA actually tried to get the name changed about ten years ago because they thought it promoted animal cruelty. Turns out ‘kill’ is a reference to “being by the water’……I think.

Does Bucksnort, TN qualify? I always loved the name.

Try White Bear, and White Bear Lake in Minnesota. Both places were developed by Chicago mobsters looking for place to hide while the Feds got on their butts in Chicago.

You should come up north here to Canada. We love to name cities after animals. Two of my favourites are Moosejaw,Saskatchewan and Moose Factory, Ontario.
