More absurd place names: Towns named for animals
by Mary - September 26, 2006 - 4:05 PM

b012.JPGI never thought I’d say this, but I saw something amusing in an airline magazine recently and wanted to share — a list of American cities named after various animals, ranging from the obvious (Buffalo, New York) to the obscure (Fly, Ohio). If you know some that weren’t in the article, feel free to add them in the comments…

  • Alaska: Fox, Chicken
  • Arkansas: Deer
  • California: Antelope
  • Colorado: Dinosaur
  • Florida: Flamingo
  • Georgia: Parrot
  • Kansas: Partridge
  • Louisiana: Trout, Pelican
  • Michigan: White Pigeon, Wolverine
  • Minnesota: Badger
  • Mississippi: Alligator
  • Missouri: Crane
  • Montana: Anaconda, Monarch, Otter
  • Nebraska: Eagle
  • Nevada: Carp
  • New Jersey: White Horse
  • New Mexico: Coyote
  • New York: Buffalo
  • Ohio: Fly
  • Oklahoma: Mustang
  • Pennsylvania: Sturgeon
  • South Dakota: Porcupine
  • Texas: Falcon, Turkey, Marlin
  • Utah: Beaver
  • Washington: Elk, Tiger, Cougar, White Swan, White Salmon
  • West Virginia: Duck, Man
  • Wyoming: Wolf, Moose

beaver.jpgThe article also notes that there are no towns or cities called Bear (not including Bear River, Bear Mountain and so on), and that “the most popular place name for towns, as well as rivers, creeks, and mountains, is Beaver.” There’s definitely a joke in there somewhere, and we’re definitely not gonna make it.

  1. “…“the most popular place name for towns, as well as rivers, creeks, and mountains, is Beaver.” There’s definitely a joke in there somewhere, and we’re definitely not gonna make it.”

    dam.

  2. There is a Bear, DE, but I’m not sure if it actually qualifies as a city.

  3. some more cities in Oregon named for animals: also Beaverton and Troutdale Oregon

  4. There’s a Fishkill in New York. PETA actually tried to get the name changed about ten years ago because they thought it promoted animal cruelty. Turns out ‘kill’ is a reference to “being by the water’……I think.

  5. Does Bucksnort, TN qualify? I always loved the name.

  6. Try White Bear, and White Bear Lake in Minnesota. Both places were developed by Chicago mobsters looking for place to hide while the Feds got on their butts in Chicago.

  7. South Carolina:

    Buffalo

    Roebuck

“…Others say the name came from the prominence of geese in the waterway….”

  8. There’s a Beaver Bottom, Kentucky. Also one in Utah.

  9. You should come up north here to Canada. We love to name cities after animals. Two of my favourites are Moosejaw,Saskatchewan and Moose Factory, Ontario.

  10. I’m not sure if these places count, but here are some more towns in Maine:
Bass Harbor and Swan’s Island http://www.swansisland.org/

  11. If you want a climax, just come to Climax, North Carolina
