This Christmas, Sherlock Holmes will celebrate his 121st birthday. Since Arthur Conan Doyle first created the detective in 1887, Sherlock Holmes has been paraded on the big screen, parodied, dissected, but most of all beloved by millions. There are dozens of official fan societies and countless offshoots. So there have to be some loyal mental_floss readers out there who can don their deerstalker hats and solve this one in no time flat. After all, it’s elementary.

  3. 100% here too! From the complete anthology I read as a pre-teen, to Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett (plus other actors before and since), I’ve been a Holmes geek for more years than I will reveal.

    And I’m proud of it …

  5. 100%, Holy cow! I haven’t read S.H. since college (20+ years ago, now). About half of them I actually remembered, the rest I was able to…DEDUCE from the description. Makes me want to dig out my old anthology and revisit 221B Baker Street.

  7. I am another 100%-er that hasn’t read the Holmes stories in many years. Yea! to all of us who managed this feat!

    I look forward to the next iteration of the franchise; Robert Downey, jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson. Rachael McAdams as Irene Adler. Sound good?
