Knowing the all of the states in aplphabetical order makes answering the state themed Brain Games very easy. I owe it all to the second grade in grammar school and the teachers forcing us to memorize “Fifty Nifty United States”. Anyone else remember that classic?

Mikey:
I never learned it, but my mom did attempt to teach it to me. I was never good with song lyrics . . .

5o Nifty United States? Up until a few years ago I had a blue mimeographed (remember those handouts?) copy. Anyone have the actual ‘lyrics’?
It is a sad time when they no longer require remembering the names of the states in school :(

hey, the “fifty nifty united states” was my trick too. sooooo useful.
the other song we were made to learn isn’t as helpful (Put another Nickel in, in the Nickelodean, etc, etc, etc…)

I never learned the states in order, but there’s a great song from the cartoon Animaniacs that lists all fifty states and their capitals. Never lets me down.

Wow, Miss C, that clip was interesting. The creator is not a big fan of Idaho, apparently!

Not to be a nag, but… well, ok I AM being a nag, but still… in Wyoming, the “y” is indeed a vowel. It’s only a consonant in words where it makes a consonant sound, like in “yes.” Right?

Good quiz today. I had to revert back to the elementary school song I learned, but it was fun. Thanks for the clip Miss C. I agree with Johnny Cat. The creator does not like Idaho. :O)

To Jeff, this how I learned the song:
Fifty nifty United States
From 13 original colonies
Fifty nifty stars on the flag
That billows so beautifully in the breeze
Each individual state contributes a quality that is great
Each individual state deserves a bow, let’s salute them now!
(and then you list them all in alphabetical order)

It’s amazing that I still remember “Fifty Nifty”. I think I was in the 3rd grade. That’s how I came up with the answer. I remember once in OM we had like 30 seconds to list as many states as possible. I remember I got the most (I don’t know how many that was) but I didn’t get past the M’s. It was embarrassing because I was living in New Hampshire and hadn’t even listed it!

“Fifty Nifty United States” did the trick for me. I occasionally pull it out as a joke at parties… which makes me sound rather sad, actually.

I’ve never heard the “Fifty Nifty United States” song. Maybe I’m too young? I was required to learn all of the state capitals, however, and be able to find the states on a map. So I was still able to answer this brain game!
recaptcha: wishing street. that’s either a really good or really bad place to be!

Mikey,
Do I!! Sometimes I still find myself humming it at work. Doesnt help that I work at a packing warehouse and ship packages all over the U.S.. So yes I find that song stuck in my head quite often.
