Christina's right. Lincoln didn't even oppose slavery until it was politically expedient: in the middle of the war. Thomas J. DiLorenzo has written some excellent books contrasting the historical Lincoln with the mythological Lincoln: "The Real Lincoln" and "Lincoln Unmasked". I highly recommend them both.

This also proves the great quote from one of the Doug Adams Hitch-hiker books. I believe it was Zaphod Beeblebrox who said, "anyone who wants the job (president of the universe) is automatically unqualifed to hold the job"

I remember one of LBJ's tv ads the got heavy rotation making the ridiculous claim that Goldwater wanted to "saw off the Eastern seaboard" - complete with the visual of the eastern states being sliced off of a plywood map and floating away. I was just a kid then but the whole thing just hit me as totally absurd.

It was also the impetus for questions I still haven't found an answer for: What's the difference between the "Eastern Seaboard" and the East Coast"? and Whay does nobody ever use the term "Western Seaboard"?

Where can I get a bumper sticker that says "This country will remain American. Its next President will remain in our own country.”

Brilliant.

Great article, I will check out your book.

I bought this book after you guys posted the Al Smith-Herbert Hoover excerpt. It's been a great read. You could have made this list 100 items long.
