I’ve always found it strange that Rip Van Winkle supposedly slept in the Catskill Mountains, which are at least 50 miles from Tarrytown.

There is also a sculpture of Rip at the top of the Hunter Mountain Ski Area (NOT the summit!).

I used to live in North Tarrytown and go running by that graveyard all the time. If I remember correctly, there’s a witch’s trail in the Rockefeller state park behind that cemetery, and I’m pretty sure Hulda the Witch has a gravestone, as I’ve seen it. It’s quite faded and difficult to read. Perhaps it was added after her death.

GEORGIE!!! Freaky…I would have had a panic attack and run away..fast.

When I was little, we used to have annual Legend of Sleepy Hollow watchings at school. We’d all gather in the auditorium and sit on the floor and the teachers did this mini dance and song Halloween show before handing out lollipops and settling us down to watch the Disney movie.

I was scared crapless of that movie as a kid. I haven’t seen it in years…*sigh*

I spent my freshman year of college at Marymount University in Tarrytown. It was an all girls school with a wonderfully old campus. I am absolutely certain that campus is haunted. A lot of odd things happened in the dorms. It is now part of Forhdam and has since been named Fordham at Westchester.

Anyway, I was really excited to learn that Sleepy Hallow was just down the street and was expecting some spectacular Halloween fun. Unfortunately most of the town’s activities were extremely kid friendly and not anywhere close to scary.

We ended up trick or treating around town and got lots of full size candy bars!

The only version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow I have been exposed to starred Jeff Goldblum as Ichabod Crane. I remember as being slightly comedic. Wish I could see it again!

Isn’t it just as ridiculous that they can’t have a Halloween party at school? At least they can’t at my daughter’s school.
