My age was in single digits when John Anderson's run for the presidency coincided with the national debut of a country/western singer by the same name. My parents had to explain to me that the guy we heard singing on the radio was not the guy running for president (and that John "Rose Colored Glasses" Conlee was not the same person as John Connally, who also ran that year).

When I was in my 11th grade US History class and we discussed Eugene Debs, some friends and I thought he should have used "Pardon Me" as his campaign slogan.

As for Norman Thomas, I still remember the quote attributed to Bill Veeck about why he kept voting for Thomas long after Thomas had died: "Because I'd rather vote for a dead man with class than either of two live bums."

Great article, David.

On our 4th grade class field trip to Montgomery in 1995 we met George Wallace.. some of us were touring a building and someone just rolled him into the room in a wheelchair. He was really old and didn't say much of anything, but our teacher said it was very important--so he autographed some pamphlets for us.

I actually voted for Perot in 1992. Turned out the "giant sucking sound" was to India instead of Mexico and was white collar jobs instead of blue.

Wallace died in 1998, not '88.

And Ash needs to let it go.

Funny that in 1948 Americans wouldn't elect a Socialist, but in 2008 we just did. My how things change in only 60 years...
