Audie Murphy became famous *because* he was a soldier. He wasn't a celebrity who later joined the military. His fame didn't really take off until after the war.

Yeah, Audie Murphy really needs to be on the list. Medal of Honor, starred as himself in the movie depicting his bravery that earned him the MoH.

He will always be a fascinating man.

Both of Jimmy Stewart's grandparents? I don't know about him, but I had four....2 Grandfathers and 2 Grandmothers.....Perhaps there is something we don't know about his parentage?

Yeah, I was a little surprised that Audie Murphy wasn't mentioned. As far as I know, he's the only celebrity that served in the military to earn the Medal of Honor.

My husband's uncle served with Paul Newman.
Also there is Rocky Blier (?) from the Pittsburgh Steelers and there was a NFL player killed in Vietnam. I remember seeing a display in the NFL Hall Of Fame.

Not many of todays actors/ actresses or pro athletes have the patriotism that the Greates Generation did.

Both my husband (Desert Storm) and I served in the armed forces, as did both of our grandfather (WWII) and my great-grandfather (WW I)

I'm a day late, but enjoyed the post very much! Thanks Veterans!!! Before my grandfather passed away, I had the honor of attending two WWII Army reunions with him (both within the last six years). It was a pleasure to meet those men, who were by then in their late 70s-early 90s, but still traveled across the country for the reunion. One year was in D.C. right after the WWII memorial opened-it was really special to see those guys react to that. Another year involved a trip to the Truman library, which also brought some unique perspective. It's something I will always be glad I got to do.

I wouldn't mind seeing a whole post on Jimmy Stewart's service. Maybe there's a Memorial Day post in there?

I'm with you on the Affleck/Miller thing. Their face shape is strikingly similar. I think Miller's glasses are throwing people off.
