The phrase “light pollution” always brings to mind the big blackout in the northeast US in August 2003.
I live less than 20 miles from midtown Manhattan and normally can’t see many stars from my front yard, but that night was absolutely amazing. Everyone in the neighborhood was outdoors just looking up in awe – the kind of view of zillions of stars in the night sky that we’d normally have to travel many, many miles away to see.
It makes me sad to think that a vista like that will probably never – ever – be visible again in this area.
