On day four of New T-Shirt Week (!!), we’ve got one for all you math junkies. Order today and get a 10% discount—head over to the mental_floss store, add it to your cart, and use the code “math” during checkout. (You can click on either shirt image above.)
Imaginary number expert Amy Whinston is responsible for today’s shirt. (I mean she knows her imaginary numbers, not that she’s a number expert who is not real.) Well done, Amy! Here’s a little bit about her:
“Amy Whinston teaches math at the University of Alaska. She loves math more than chocolate, but less than schnauzers.”
See what else the mental_floss store has to offer this holiday season.
Just to be argumentative, in electrical engineering the square root of -1 is referred to as “j”, due to the fact that “i” is the standard variable letter of choice for current (v=i*r).

Nice one, Amy! I will forward this page to my wife, who was asking me for christmas ideas just last night.
I like the idea of another shirt for electrical engineers with Joel’s asterisk on the back. I’m no electrical engineer but I was the treasurer of my high school math club. Since we didn’t pay dues or buy anything, my job was pretty easy.

Leave it to the engineers to take the humor out of everything… ;)
Just to be further argumentative, in medical school the square root of -1 is referred to as “I used to know that as an undergrad, but now I don’t have room for it in my feeble brain.” (i + age + knew-it-for-the-MCAT = forgotten).

Yeah Amy! Way to go! I thought this might have come from an actuary, but an actuary’s sister is great too!

Joel – Yes, the square root of -1 is supposed to be a j. Didn’t you realize the shirt is in French?
