Don Levy found a suitcase full of photographs ready to be picked up by  the garbage service in Watertown, Massachusetts. The photographs show Hiroshima in the period shortly after the US dropped the atomic bomb on the city in 1945.

  1. I love your Morning cup O Links post, but you’ll want to update the movies that found early success post, The Dark Knight is now the number 1 all time opening day movie.

  2. :\’(

  3. The article about the Hiroshima photos is wonderful, but I’m a little confused (it went back and forth so much). Did you notice if they said where the photos are now, or what’s being done with them? If they’re on exhibit anywhere, I’d love to know about it!

    Hey! Recaptcha: Attache Take

  4. The pictures were purchased by International Center of Photography in 2006. Besides the few that accompany the article, I don’t know if they are on display anywhere, but should be eventually.

  5. I love this post! Esp since it tends to be posted when it’s only 9:30pm or so here (NZ).

    A few comments:
-The pics of Hiroshima are heartbreaking. I’ll never forget the pictures that are in the Smithsonian American History Museum – esp the one that shows a black mark on the pavement where a person used to be. Tragic.

    - Whales! I’m going to share this with DOC (Department of Conservation) here, as they run a program to study whales to show the Japanese that whales do not have to be slaughtered to be studied. Most of the studies are observation, but they also shoot darts (that immediately pop out) into the whales to get DNA.

-I’m hopeful with our new president, but it’s a little annoying that all presidents set targets far beyond their terms. Would be nice to have two-fold goals: ones within the four years, and ones further out.

  6. The Hiroshima article is one of the best articles I’ve read all year. Thanks for sharing.
