Tom Petty also went into bankruptcy fighting his record label for control of his music. Everyone told him it was a hopeless case, but in the end he won the case.

As for the Burt Reynolds reference, North Phoenix blogger is correct. Unfortunately, Florida has become a haven for out-of-state millionaires seeking to hold on to their worth. They buy huge mansions and expensive cars (your primary car is also protected) before filing. Reynolds didn't move to Florida as a dodge, though, as he has lived here since childhood.

As a proud resident of Milton Hershey's town, I'd like to point out that not only was he insanely rich, but he gave it ALL away to form a Trust which funds a school for disadvantaged children. Almost 2,000 children attend the school that bears his name, free of charge.

Alan Bond went bankrupt MANY times before he became a billionaire, and then did it again. He doesn't deserve hero worship, but I think he's had an unfair share of criticism compared to most dodgy businessmen. Here's a desperate attempt to rebalance that.

Old man Heinz made up the number 57 varieties. He saw an ad offering 27 styles of shoes. I learned that by being a loyal Mental Floss reader.

bankruptcy is not the end of the road; just another fork in the line of site and another path to take for a new beginning. many people make the mistake of thinking it is the END! you needn't be famous or infamous to find yourself in $$$ dire straits. think of it as life's lessons and learn from it. bravo, however, to those who didn't give up, went on to bigger and better things and possibly made all our lives a lot better!

While I agree that Burt Reynolds holding on to a multi-million dollar house while declaring bankruptcy reeks of greed, he was completely within the law. In Florida, a person's primary residence cannot be seized by a creditor or forced for sale under process of any court. The article makes it sound like he got special treatment because of his celebrity status, but what he did was technically legal. Although I have to agree that a more humble man should have sold the property and moved somewhere more sensible.
