Brain Game: Monday Night on Tuesday

After several late nights (and early mornings) fact-checking the upcoming issue of mental_floss, my wife Kara took Monday to catch up on her rest. I should have done the same, but instead, I watched Monday Night Football. I still forget that it’s on ESPN now instead of ABC, but that just shows my age.

Anyway, last night’s game involved the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints. Noting that both of those location/team combinations were three words long, the names of NFL teams begged some research, and I came up with today’s Brain Game. (So now I can feel like my TV watching contributed to my job. Woohoo!)

When it comes to current location-team combinations,
what NFL team has an eight-syllable name
(longer than any other)?

HERE is the solution.

  1. NOTE: I’ve altered the question… I did blow it earlier this morning when I asked for three-syllable team names. (That’s what I get for staying up late and doing the Brain Game late at night after MNF!) The respondants were correct, there are two: The Cleveland Browns and New York Jets.

Someone suggested the Detroit Lions, but (1) they’re four syllables, not three, and (2) they aren’t a real NFL team. Or at least they don’t play like one. :)

  2. I only have New York Jets and Cleveland Browns fitting this category. Detroit Lions is 4 syllables (dee-troit li-ons).

  3. I had to count out “Indianapolis Colts” three times before I was sure it was only seven. Good one today, Sandy.

And I counted “Detroit Lions” as four, but I suppose it’s all in how you (over)pronounce it.

  4. i was thinking the philadelphia eagles, but san fran was my 2nd guess

  5. This one was pretty easy for those of us who remembered the previous brain game about city-NBA team syllable counts. Don’t remember the question, but the answer was the Sixers (Phil-a-del-phi-a Sev-en-ty Six-ers). Those number teams’ll getcha every time.

Does this mean I spend way too much work time on this website?

  6. No, Pete, it means I’ve gone to the well one too many time with the pro sports teams / number of syllables puzzle!

  7. SF 49er’s

  8. washington district of columbia redskins – 12 syllables?
    OK, I’m stretching a little.
@Sandy – You should write a book of Brain Games.

  9. Great late night work, yet again!

  10. Got it.

Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles, and Arizona Cardinals all made me angry at being only 7.

But with patience, I figured it out.

  11. Counting syllables and my southern drawl has me at a slight disadvantage but I got it. Yes I say h3ll with at least 2 syllables!!

  12. Thanks, Slackjack. Tell my agent!

  13. I was thinking San Diego Super Chargers.

  14. It’s much too late for me to be attempting these sorts of puzzles. I was running through a list of city-team combos in my head and first thought–”OK, San Francisco Giants doesn’t work…” Out of my league, I guess. :D

  15. Got it on first try!
