Jenny, you realize of course that Netflix doesn't create the ads that show up online. It's generally companies like doubleclick and others who actually create the ads and pop-ups...not the company paying for the ad. So, you're boycott is targeting the wrong people. Pepsi has pop-up ads too, so do Toyota and pretty much any other big business...are you going to boycott all of them too just because you once saw a pop-up ad?

Thanks for the update on the NetFlix Prize. Every now and then it crosses my mind.

Personally, I think they need to take a Pandora.com approach and give movies human-generated attributes.

I've always been fascinated by the system. For me, it's quite accurate with the exception of indie comedies. They always seem to assume I'll like it but it's always a crapshoot. A very interesting article and I plan to work on the problem myself as soon as finals are over!

Netflix adds can be annoying but it's a very convenient service, especially if all of the brick and mortar DVD rental stores around you have closed.

As for the article..., very interesting. Even more interesting is that I have rated 1180 DVDs on Netflix and Netflix returns zero recommendations. Perhaps my tastes are to eclectic for those dang old algorithms.

The word "Netflix" caught my attention because there are quite a few websites (Snopes.com is one of them) where Netflix pops up even with a pop up blocker. I refuse to ever purchase anything from them for this reason.
