I wouldn’t call it a failure. Hachiko’s story was in one of my earlier posts, “6 Utterly Loyal Dogs” which is linked at the end of this post.

I don’t know how you failed to include Hachiko. That’s the dog whose owner died while at work and who subsequently walked himself to the train station everyday for the remainder of the dog’s life (8 years) to wait for his master on the 2 o’clock train.

Owney is a great story. When I was a kid, our postal delivery person told me about that dog and I thought it was such a cool story.

Stuffing animals/pets is unusual, but if my pet is a hero, then maybe I will seek it out. I think burying people in general is strange, just burn the bodies and return us as ash to the earth from whence we came. If my corpse is to be preserved in any way, however, I’d prefer plastination, a la “Bodyworlds”

Balto was only one of three dogs who ran the diphtheria epidemic run, he was interchanged with 2 other dogs named Fritz and Togo, lead by Leonard Seppala. What is not commonly known is that Togo ran most of the race, Seppala’s most beloved friend, trusted him with his life. Balto finished the race and got all the media attention, then Universal furthered his fame more. Togo has a camp named after him in his honor in Wasilla,AK called ‘Camp Togowoods’ Unortunately Fritz was the red headed step child of the bunch and I think he’s embalmed at the Iditerod museum.

you know, all these dogs are great. i often wonder if they reincarnate themselves again…kinda like my dog, he carries many human traits… =)
