Drummers usually get stuck in the background when a rock band plays live in concert. That’s why many songs begin (and end) with the rumble of the drums; it gives the percussionists a few extra seconds of attention. It also makes up for all the concertgoers who go to get a beverage or use the “facilities” during their 23-minute tympani-and-bell drum solos.

Today’s quiz is our first entry in the Let There Be Drums series. All you have to do is listen to each of 10 drum intros to hit songs of the late 1960s, and match them with the correct song title. Easy? Maybe for some!

  1. That was HARD. The only ones I knew for sure were Donovan, The Doors, and CCR. I’d like to see more of these kinds of quizzes (with musical accompaniment). Like the theme songs quizzes a few weeks ago.

  2. Nice… very tough, though. Looking forward to the next edition!

  3. Thanks, folks — and yes, I knew it would be tough, but we’ll do other editions from other musical genres and eras.

Indeed, 40- and 50-somethings will almost certainly perform better on this particular quiz than 20- and 30-somethings will.

  4. What!? I’m 24 and I aced the thing! I really liked this one…you should do more quizzes where I know all the songs :D

  5. This quiz was fun and to my surprise I got a 100%… I had to listen to a few clips more than once. The one that surpised me was the Bob Dylan song and the “They’re coming to take me away” song. They both sounded similar

  6. 8/10 – I just wanted to thank you for making sure it fit on one page so no scrolling was needed :)

  7. Really liked this one! I got 6/10 and I’m 28….better than I thought!

  8. Count me in as another 24 year old who got them all right!

  9. Awesome Quiz! Look forward to much more!

  10. Yea! Got a 100. Had to listen to a couple of them twice though. Fun quiz!

  11. 7/10. Impressed even myself.

  12. Nice catch, Sarah.

I noticed that too when I was putting this quiz together — in the first few seconds, “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35″ and “They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haa!” are eerily similar. Same type of beat, same speed…

and same subject matter, to some extent.

P.S. I’m not one to post reCaptchas, but “Incendiarism Uyeno”? Wow.

  13. I only got 2 out of 10 and I’m in my 40’s. i guess that I didn’t listen to that much music when I was a kid.

What do you call a guy who likes to hang out with musicians……the drummer.

  14. That was fun and fascinating. I must really be old, but did (and do) enjoy the music. I was a drummer, so always loved the drumbits in tunes of the day. Just don’t ever wanna play Wipeout for the rest of my natural life.

  15. I mixed 1 and 5. I’m 52 and knew most from memory and i-Pod.
