You visit the sites regularly, but how well do you know the people they’re named after? Here’s some basic bio information on four of the biggies.
1. Matt Drudge
URL - www.drudgereport.com
Born - Takoma Park, Maryland, in 1966
A rebel yell? – If you read the sites Drudge links to, you know which way his politics lean. But it’s interesting to note that the man who sides with FOX 95% of the time, and who’s vocally pro-life, was raised by Jewish liberal Dems.
Ah, youth… – Arrested when he was 15 for “making annoying telephone calls” - Graduated in the belly of his high school class (341 out of 355)
Day jobs back in the day - 7-Eleven cashier; telemarketer; McDonald’s manager; sales assistant at a grocery store in NYC; gift shop clerk at CBS studios in Los Angeles
Up, Up and Away – The Drudge Report started in 1995 as a Hollywood gossip/opinion newsletter that Drudge emailed out to a small list. Today the Web site racks up tens of millions of hits a day.
2. Angie Hicks Bowman
URL - www.angieslist.com
Born – 1973, the daughter of a bank teller mom and a UPS driver dad
A+ - studied economics at DePauw University on a scholarship, and later got her MBA from Harvard Business School
Inspiration/ perspiration – Frustrated finding decent contractors in Columbus, OH, where she was living in 1995, Angie went door-to-door putting together a list based on friends and neighbors’ word-of-mouth. These served as the original database for the ste’s unbiased ratings and reviews.
Angie’s blog – Interested in following the daily musings of Angie? Check out her blog here.
When she’s not working: Yard work, Indiana University basketball, home repair
Up, Up and Away – Started in 1995, the Web site now employs more than 400 people nationwide and has more than 650,000 members.
3. Craig Newmark
URL – www.craigslist.org
Born - 1952 in Morristown, New Jersey
That’s some BS - Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University
What’s his 20? Newmark says he spends his days sitting in front of his computer, dealing with customer service e-mails, spam, and other press stuff. And he does write back if you e-mail him directly. (At least he did write this author back.)
Craig’s blog - Keep up with Craig’s personal life and philanthropic interests over at his blog, www.cnewmark.com
Day jobs back in the day - Programmer, IBM Development Lab; Webmaster, Xircom; contributed extensively to development and deployment of Web and AOL based HomeBanking for Bank of America
Up, Up and Away – Started in San Francisco in 1995, Craigslist is now ranked in the top 50 Web sites the world over (traffic-wise) with more than nine billion page views per month coming from more than 50 countries.
4. Justin Kan
URL – www.justin.tv
Born – so young, you don’t want to know (seriously, the dude is like 24)
Precocious much? – Went to Yale and started his first business — a Web calendaring company called Kiko.com — when he was a senior at college (which was only two years ago). He quickly sold Kiko over eBay, for $258,100, and went to work on Justin.tv
I Copy That - “I swear I came up with the idea myself,” Kan once said in an interview. “But no one ever believes me now. They’re like, ‘Oh, it’s so much like EDtv.’” (Actually, some thought it was more like a copy of Jennicam.)
The there there - Y Combinator seeded Justin.tv, turning the 24-hour reality show into a live-streaming site for Everyman.
Up, Up and Away - What started in San Francisco in 2007 as a place to watch Justin lifecast, has now grown to more than 30,000 broadcasting accounts and 300 million monthly pageviews (the site is ranked in the top 200, internationally).
it seems like 1995 was a good year to start web sites. too bad i was only thirteen and barely knew what a web site was.

Hey, I was born in the next town over from Drudge’s hometown. I guess that’s not a compliment, actually. It’s really, really close to DC (inner Beltway, for those who know), which is probably why he’s a political commentator. It’s also a nice area, with lots of older homes.

So this confirms it, Matt Drudge is a stupid loser. No mention of his bizarre smeared egg sex fetish.

Pardon me for observing that low-ranking graduation and menial jobs in the PAST do not “confirm” one is a loser. Isn’t it the opposite of being a loser to transcend mediocre beginnings? You may not like what he does — and I’m not a Drudge fan either — but you cannot argue he hasn’t had success with it.
And forgive me for further noting …I’ve known very bright individuals that didn’t have the focus in school to achieve high grades, and were content enough to do unglamorous work that didn’t slurp up their entire life and left them free to do what they wanted. I don’t look down upon them because of that.
