Cool! Radiolab also did a piece on this in a show about music. It turns out that the riot may have been caused by something neurological in the audience--the dissonance may have triggered electrical impulses in their brains that caused mass hysteria (especially since they weren't expecting that music and had never heard anything like it). Interesting stuff.

I was a classically trained ballerina for most of my childhood and high school days, and I can see how it would have been upsetting to watch at first....just the way the dancers move looks absolutely painful! It's also a completely brilliant work, and a wonderful way to begin a legacy of more modern dance techniques. Very enjoyable to watch after the initial shock of how different it is wears off! (I could also picture the Fantasia images as the music was playing...definitely different!)

Thanks! We just talked about the Rite of Spring in my western music class. We asked to see a video of the ballet, but we didn't have time. So it's exciting to see it here!

That's fun. I knew some of the details, but not this much. I remember seeing the ballet with my mother several years ago and falling in love with it instantly. It was the first time I can remember ever paying attention to lighting design, which I have since gone on to study.
