One of the cooler aspects of this site, at least for me, is the sense of community it creates. You know when you hit that mentalfloss bookmark that your browser is about to take you to a place where likeminded people hang out, where topics you care about are discussed, and where you know you can always learn something new. And the knowledge isn’t just dropped by our fantastic team of bloggers and writers, it’s often waiting for you there in the comments, penned by some of the smartest readers on the Internet (you!).
That’s why we occasionally like to take a post and pose a question—to see what you think, what you have to say. Longtime friends of the _floss might remember the What’s your default song? post, where we asked you what tune your brain defaulted to when trying to get a bad earworm out of your head. Or our What’s the Nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? post.
Today, I’ve got a new one to ask you: What songs give good workout? By that I mean, what songs do you listen to at the gym? Because for me, a good workout is totally dependant on good tunage. The band Garbage, for instance, really inspires me on the elliptical machine—songs like “Push It” or “When I Grow Up,” for instance, are great for getting the heart rate up. When doing free weights, I’ll switch over to something like “So What’cha Want” by the Beastie Boys.
What about you all? What songs give you good workout?
“When I Grow Up” excerpt
I know its cliche to listen to hard rock, but I listen to System of a Down when I work out. I would also listen to Metallica, Rush, Van Halen, or AC/DC, but SOAD rules my ipod during workout time.

“SOS” – Rhianna
“Welcome to the Jungle” – Guns N’ Roses (because it has a little bit of a cool down section)

I know it’s a little old but Kyle Minogue’s ‘can’t get you out of my head’ (a super fast version) is what gets me to keep on going.

It’s acoustic with no lyrics, but I can’t help but want to run faster when “Diablo Rojo” by Rodrigo y Gabriela comes up on my ipod.

These two songs are typically played first on my “workout” playlist on my iPod:
1. Promentory from the movie “Last of the Mohicans” always has me ready to fight someone
2. Vince DiCola’s “Training Montage” from the Rocky soundtrack is a good one to run or lift wieghts to

I’m a music nerd, a musician since 5, and a weekend percussionist so for me workout music is a HUGE problem. If I’m jogging then the song has to have beats per minutes that match the speed that I want to run. For that reason I usually end up listening to a lot of folk rock like Josh Ritter, Martin Sexton, Wood Brothers, etc. Strangely a good defined hip-hop beat like Jay-Z is where I go to when I need a little extra motivation.

Avril Lavigne’s Best Damn Thing has the PERFECT cadence for me to run to. If I need to push through a run, I just put it on in a loop. Works everytime!

I listen to mostly psychobilly music when i work out, just because it’s fast, upbeat, and the lyrics always paint a fun story. Also randoms are “fighter” by christina aguilera (shut up she rocks) and “breakfast at tiffany’s” because it makes me laugh.
system of a down and linkin park – melodic metal – is great. oh, and the hair metal classics like Danger Danger and Electric Boys to remind me that i want to look like a video girl, so i keep peddling away on that elliptical.

Ooh this is convenient because I have been meaning to put together a good workout playlist.
1. Any uptempo Morningwood song, Ex: “Everybody Rules”
2. For a little more soul “Tripping on Sunshine” by Jesus Jackson
3. Ben Kweller “Hear Me Out” is good towards the beginnning or end, not too intense

“Another White Dash” – Butterfly Boucher
“Mary Mac” – Carbon Leaf
“Bandages” – Hot Hot Heat
“Sweep the Leg” and “Michael” – No More Kings
“Broken Record” and “Banditos” – The Refreshments

Check out 45:33 by LCD Soundsytem. It was part of a promotion by Nike and iTunes to “to reward and push at good intervals of a run.” The guy who made it is not a jogger at all, but the electronic music is easy to get caught up in, and the fast beats might increase your rate of movement.

I also opt for the hard stuff. Megadeth’s album, So Far, So Good, So What? is always a favorite for the Bowflex.

Strange, I know, but Japanese rock works best for me, and at the top of that list is D’espairs Ray. It’s really upbeat metal with a dizzying tempo so it always inspires me to hit higher mph numbers on the tredmill. Anything by Dir en Grey or Rentrer en Soi works great too! Just beware of the strange noies the vocalists make sometimes. The first time I tried it, a noise in the background of the song scared me so bad that I nearly fell off XD

Queen. Most definitely the best song to run to is Don’t Stop Me Now.
If I’m feeling in a classical mood, however, the best choice is Verdi’s Dies Irae from the Requiem. I’ve also found that Dies Irae is good for merging on to highways, or riding into battle with your hair billowing in the wind.

“Let Me Clear My Throat” By DJ Kool (which is also the song they used to play at a bar I “bounced” at after any good fights in the club during the night)
“No Limit Soldiers” by Master P
“Pimp In My Own Rhyme” by 8-ball
Any song by N.W.A or Public Enemy (”FLAVA FLAV….YEAH BOOOYYYY”).
If the Gangsta’ Beats aren’t getting it done for me, then I switch it up to 90’s pop. I think that is more of a regression to my peak of listening to Pop Music and it just makes me feel young again.
Maybe I’ve found the reason why I quit going to the gym…

When I do fast cardio (i.e. jogging on the treadmill), I need fast, angry music for some reason! I also needed music that had lyrics that I know. So, I’ve come up with the following playlist:
1) This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race/Fall Out Boy
2) Evenflow/Pearl Jam
3) Get Up, Get Out!/Godsmack
4) Leave You Far Behind/Lunatic Calm
5) Dragula(Hot Rod Herman Remix)/Rob Zombie
6) Break Stuff/Limp Bizkit
7) Rock is Dead/Marilyn Manson
8) Whatever/Godsmack
9) The Beautiful People/Marilyn Manson
10) Pressure/Staind
11) Smooth Criminal/Alien Ant Farm
12) Excuse Me Mr./No Doubt
13) C’Mon C’Mon/The Von Blondies
14) There and Back Again/Chris Daughtry
15) For You/Staind
16) Nookie/Limp Bizkit
17) Take It/Staind
18) The Pretender/Foo Fighters
19) Rollin/Limp Bizkit
20) Front Row/Alanis Morissette
There are times I don’t necessarily want to be angry while working out, so I have a “fun” list that I sort through while not working out as fast/hard:
Again & Again/The Bird and the Bee
a few songs from Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake as well as Ani DiFranco, Rusted Root and Alanis Morissette

“Hand in the Sky (Big Shot)” – Straylight Run
“Carmina Buarana”
“And the Wicked Burnt Black” – As Tall As Lions
“Paper Planes” – MIA
“Seven” – Sunny Day Real Estate
Mostly stuff that starts out slow and then builds up to the point that I’m full of energy.
Then when I actually start to work out I’ll throw on an old-school Punk playlist with a few more recent tracks.
