What Songs Give Good Workout?
by David K. Israel - December 11, 2008 - 10:11 AM

gym.jpgOne of the cooler aspects of this site, at least for me, is the sense of community it creates. You know when you hit that mentalfloss bookmark that your browser is about to take you to a place where likeminded people hang out, where topics you care about are discussed, and where you know you can always learn something new. And the knowledge isn’t just dropped by our fantastic team of bloggers and writers, it’s often waiting for you there in the comments, penned by some of the smartest readers on the Internet (you!).

That’s why we occasionally like to take a post and pose a question—to see what you think, what you have to say. Longtime friends of the _floss might remember the What’s your default song? post, where we asked you what tune your brain defaulted to when trying to get a bad earworm out of your head. Or our What’s the Nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? post.

Today, I’ve got a new one to ask you: What songs give good workout? By that I mean, what songs do you listen to at the gym? Because for me, a good workout is totally dependant on good tunage. The band Garbage, for instance, really inspires me on the elliptical machine—songs like “Push It” or “When I Grow Up,” for instance, are great for getting the heart rate up. When doing free weights, I’ll switch over to something like “So What’cha Want” by the Beastie Boys.

What about you all? What songs give you good workout?

“When I Grow Up” excerpt

Comments (88)
  1. I know its cliche to listen to hard rock, but I listen to System of a Down when I work out. I would also listen to Metallica, Rush, Van Halen, or AC/DC, but SOAD rules my ipod during workout time.

  2. “SOS” – Rhianna
“Welcome to the Jungle” – Guns N’ Roses (because it has a little bit of a cool down section)

  3. I know it’s a little old but Kyle Minogue’s ‘can’t get you out of my head’ (a super fast version) is what gets me to keep on going.

  4. It’s acoustic with no lyrics, but I can’t help but want to run faster when “Diablo Rojo” by Rodrigo y Gabriela comes up on my ipod.

  5. These two songs are typically played first on my “workout” playlist on my iPod:

    1. Promentory from the movie “Last of the Mohicans” always has me ready to fight someone

    2. Vince DiCola’s “Training Montage” from the Rocky soundtrack is a good one to run or lift wieghts to

  6. I’m a music nerd, a musician since 5, and a weekend percussionist so for me workout music is a HUGE problem. If I’m jogging then the song has to have beats per minutes that match the speed that I want to run. For that reason I usually end up listening to a lot of folk rock like Josh Ritter, Martin Sexton, Wood Brothers, etc. Strangely a good defined hip-hop beat like Jay-Z is where I go to when I need a little extra motivation.

  7. Avril Lavigne’s Best Damn Thing has the PERFECT cadence for me to run to. If I need to push through a run, I just put it on in a loop. Works everytime!

  8. I listen to mostly psychobilly music when i work out, just because it’s fast, upbeat, and the lyrics always paint a fun story. Also randoms are “fighter” by christina aguilera (shut up she rocks) and “breakfast at tiffany’s” because it makes me laugh.
system of a down and linkin park – melodic metal – is great. oh, and the hair metal classics like Danger Danger and Electric Boys to remind me that i want to look like a video girl, so i keep peddling away on that elliptical.

  9. As a marathon runner I like to listen to Audiobooks actually, but for shorter workouts Juno Reactor and and Tool.

  10. both:

    “the rat”

    and

    “little house of savages”

by The Walkmen are great workout tunes

  11. The Middle by Jimmy Eat World. I usually play it near the end of my workout at the hardest part to keep me going.

  12. I listen to bootlegs mashups, from http://www.bootiesf.com My absolute favorite is “Black Beatles” from the Best of Bootie: 2006 Album.

  13. Ooh this is convenient because I have been meaning to put together a good workout playlist.

    1. Any uptempo Morningwood song, Ex: “Everybody Rules”

    2. For a little more soul “Tripping on Sunshine” by Jesus Jackson

    3. Ben Kweller “Hear Me Out” is good towards the beginnning or end, not too intense

  14. I don’t like most rap music, but Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” is the best running song evar.

  15. The one I love most now is “Rent a Cop” by Ben Folds…funny and a great beat.

    Others:
“Wasted and Ready” – Ben Kweller
“Another White Dash” – Butterfly Boucher
    “Mary Mac” – Carbon Leaf
    “Bandages” – Hot Hot Heat
“Sweep the Leg” and “Michael” – No More Kings
“Broken Record” and “Banditos” – The Refreshments
“Contraband” and “Noisy Head” – Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers
    “100 Girls” – Stroke 9
“Troublemaker” and “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived” – Weezer

Too much? I like music :)

  16. “Til I Collapse” -Eminem

  17. I can’t believe no one’s mentioned Eye of the Tiger yet.

    C’mon Guys! Sly uses it.

  18. “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac. Great if you like to keep your pace varied.

  19. Old Style adrenalin rush
    Hold the Line -TOTO

  20. Anarchy in the UK- Sex Pistols
    Elevation- U2
    and
    Hawaii five-0 theme

  21. Check out 45:33 by LCD Soundsytem. It was part of a promotion by Nike and iTunes to “to reward and push at good intervals of a run.” The guy who made it is not a jogger at all, but the electronic music is easy to get caught up in, and the fast beats might increase your rate of movement.

  22. I also opt for the hard stuff. Megadeth’s album, So Far, So Good, So What? is always a favorite for the Bowflex.

  23. I usually go with Silverstein, Thrice, or the Alkaline Trio. It has to have a beat and there should be some screaming and some heartbrake.

  24. I can’t believe no one else has mentioned this:
I begin every workout with “Eye of the Tiger”! Nothing gets me going like that song- it gives me the will to survive:)
Also, if I’m walking intervals I alternate Drum Corps (great rhythms!) and Michael Jackson. Need drum corps warm-ups? check out DCI.com

  25. I would say Funky Monks by red hot chili peppers cause of the bass line, i try to keep the pace so i dont get tired…other than that, i listen to rihanna, because all of her dance songs get me amped.

  26. I also forgot flying by the beatles….it makes me zone out…perfect for when im running.

  27. I listen to podcasts when I run. I look forward to my runs with “Keith & the Girl”.

  28. 69 Boyz “Tootsie Roll” always works me into a good sweat.

  29. Missy Elliot is awesome.
    Christina Aguilera’s Candy man.
    Remy Ma’s I’m Concieded.

  30. Strange, I know, but Japanese rock works best for me, and at the top of that list is D’espairs Ray. It’s really upbeat metal with a dizzying tempo so it always inspires me to hit higher mph numbers on the tredmill. Anything by Dir en Grey or Rentrer en Soi works great too! Just beware of the strange noies the vocalists make sometimes. The first time I tried it, a noise in the background of the song scared me so bad that I nearly fell off XD

  31. I have a pretty big music collection, so i’ve tagged specific songs as “gym worthy”, so i can just download songs onto my mp3 player as autoplaylists.

When i’m running in a race, i make a “best of” compiliation of gym tracks to make me run even faster :) Some of the ones on this list are

Magical Mystery Tour – the Beatles
Be Aggressive – Faith No More
Another Night – The Real McCoy
You Wreck Me – Tom Petty
    YMCA – Village People
Paint it Black – Rolling Stones
    Simply Irrestible – Robert Palmer
Don’t Stop the Music – Rihanna
    Ready to Go – Republica
Love Rollercoaster – Red Hot Chili Peppers
Another One bites the dust – Queen
Lump – Presidents of the USA
    Hey Ya – Outkast
Head like a hole – NIN
    Wish – NIN
    Lollipop – Mika
Like I love you – Justin Timberlake
    Centerfield – John Fogerty

  32. “the distance” by Cake

  33. Queen. Most definitely the best song to run to is Don’t Stop Me Now.

If I’m feeling in a classical mood, however, the best choice is Verdi’s Dies Irae from the Requiem. I’ve also found that Dies Irae is good for merging on to highways, or riding into battle with your hair billowing in the wind.

  34. My acting class used to work out together, and we’d take turns contributing the music. A sampling:

A Little Less Sixteen Candles – FallOut Boy
    Amphetamines – Eve6
Sad Sad Situation – Bowling for Soup
    Candyman – Christina Aguilera
Cruel to be Kind – Nick Lowe
Answer the Phone – Sugar Ray
Here It Goes Again – OKGO
    Obsession Tango – Shakira
    Kiss Me Deadly – Phish
    Love Today – Mika
    Makin’ Money – Handsome Devil
    Scotty Doesn’t Know – Lustra
Slow Dance with a Stranger – Danger Radio
Somebody Told Me – The Killers
    Sorry Sorry – Rooney
    4ever – The Veronicas
I’ve Just Seen a Face – Across the Universe Soundtrack
It Won’t Be Long – Across the Universe Soundtrack

  35. Reading these songs and hearing them in my head makes me want to run around! I like Fragma’s I Need A Miracle and Nirvana’s cover of Son of a Gun:

    “Up up up and down
    Turn turn turnaround
    Round round roundabout
    And over again”

Son of a Gun is also my default song now.

  36. when i get on the elliptical i find that listening to My Chemical Romance — The Black Parade is perfect….it gives you a good 45 minute run…the first song is great to warm up to and then it cuts straight into the heavier stuff which just gets you going….there are a few slower moments throughout the album and it balances perfectly….before I know it my workout’s over and I feel great!

And no I’m not including hidden track #14

    recaptcha–lalmbeer fact

  37. just about anything by pussycat dolls, rihanna, nelly, black eyed peas, any kind of club/dance music…as long as it’s upbeat and has a rhythm.

  38. “Queen Bitch” by David Bowie or anything off Tori Amos’s “Boys for Pelee” or “From the Choirgirl Hotel” albums.

  39. “rush” by big audio dynamite

  40. I love working out to a mix of club remixes, ska and industrial metal. (Strange combination, I know.) Here are some of the song on my iPod:

“Let the Joy Rise” – Abigail
“Better Off Alone” – Alice Deejay
“Sell Out” – Reel Big Fish
“Prisoner of Society” – The Living End
    “Synasthesia” – Junkie XL
“Bombshell” – Powerman 5000 (Pretty much anything by these guys is awesome to workout to.)
“Dragula [Matrix Mix]” – Rob Zombie
    “Bad Habit” – Offspring
    “Breathe” – Prodigy
“Guerilla Radio” – Rage Against the Machine

  41. I have three that I need to get me through a tough mile: “Can’t Get You Out of my Head” by Kylie Minogue, “Blue” by Eiffel 65 and “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree” by KT Tunstell.

  42. Patrick: Yes Don’t Stop Me Now is an unbelievable song to listen to! Good choice!

  43. I like to work out to Old School Rap.

“Let Me Clear My Throat” By DJ Kool (which is also the song they used to play at a bar I “bounced” at after any good fights in the club during the night)

“No Limit Soldiers” by Master P

“Pimp In My Own Rhyme” by 8-ball

Any song by N.W.A or Public Enemy (”FLAVA FLAV….YEAH BOOOYYYY”).

If the Gangsta’ Beats aren’t getting it done for me, then I switch it up to 90’s pop. I think that is more of a regression to my peak of listening to Pop Music and it just makes me feel young again.

Maybe I’ve found the reason why I quit going to the gym…

reCAPTCHA: FILING career. It’s like they know what I do all day…scary!

  44. Usually lots of Heavy Metal.

    Currently it’s NECROPHAGIST.

  45. Recently anything by Misery Signals, Poison the Well or Darkest Hour. It’s impossible not to get pumped up to music with such balls. Anthing heavy really, Deftones and some Korn work all right. Also Mogwai and Mono have been recent favorite bands to listen to since they start out quiet but end with great orgasms of power.

  46. Fat Boy Slim or System of a Down.

  47. Girl Talk is great motivating music to run to, especially Feed the Animals

  48. The LCD Soundsystem track 45:33 mentioned above was created by a runner for running. James Murphy (aka LCD Soundsystem) has said that he created this track partly to accommodate his treadmill running workouts and the changing intervals and pacing.

  49. I have all 3 albums by the Killers, Panic at the Disco’s first album, and Boy Kill Boy’s album Civilian on my running playlist. They are all full of great fast songs. Also:

    36 Degrees – Placebo
Away From Here – The Enemy
I’m a Bitch for You – Ima Robot
    Rockafeller Skank – Fatboy Slim
    Goldigger – Kanye West
    Lose Yourself – Eminem
Tick Tick Boom – The Hives
    Womanizer – Britney Spears
Here It Goes Again – OK Go
I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You – Black Kids
    Firestarter – Prodigy

It’s a bit eclectic, but it works for me!

  50. Rage Against the Machine is great for working out.

  51. Incubus -S C I E N C E

    whole cd

    haha
    awesome

  52. LCD Soundsystem’s “Daft Punk is Playing at my House” is one of my favorite songs ever, for running and for rocking out. I haven’t tried 45:33 but I’ve heard good things.

  53. Two off the top of my head are Satisfaction by Benny Benassi & Help by the Beatles

    reCaptcha: prosperous 20

  54. Rage Against the Machine is great to workout to.

  55. I like to work out to techno or dance music, but even now and then i listed to industrial goth……i ahve to have something updbeat to keep me going….i also find that if the tempo is fast i work out harder…..

  56. I actually listen to a lot of techno when I run. It has a fast pace that I run to. A relatively new one I’ve added to my list is Ferry Corsten’s “Loud Electronic Ferocious.” Some oldies but goodies from Darude are “Sandstorm” and “Before the Storm.”

I also like Timbaland’s “The Way I Am.”

  57. the only song i always listen to at the gym is “jump in the line” by harry belafonte. :)

  58. Garbage is the best for working out!

  59. my favorite song to run to, and it started playing as i finished my run on tuesday, is “the champ” by ghostface killah.

  60. “Don’t Stop” by Blessed By A Broken Heart.

It sounds like a montage song from Breakfast Club II or Karate Kid 8

  61. My default workout playlist consists of music I don’t normally list to, with lots of pop and some classic rock. I also have a techno workout playlist, and a “Bollywood” workout playlist.

The Sign – Ace of Base
    La La – Ashlee Simpson
    Cochise – Audioslave
    Sabotage – Beastie Boys
So Whatch’cha Want – Beastie Boys
Pump It – Black Eyed Peas
    Song 2 – Blur
    The Distance – Cake
    Tubthumping – Chumbawumba
I Blieve in a Thing Called Love – The Darkness
    Lose Yourself – Eminem
Sugar, We’re Going Down – Fall Out Boy
    Everlong – Foo Fighters
    Crazy – Gnarls Barkley
    Feel Good Inc – Gorillaz
    Dare – Gorillaz
    Hollaback Girl – Gwen Stefani
    Mr Brightside – The Killers
    Crazy Train – Ozzy
Such great Heights – The Postal Service
Smack My Bitch Up – Prodigy
Cum On Feel The Noize – Quiet Riot
Bulls On Parade – Rage Against the Machine
    Pon de Replay – Rihanna
    Filthy Gorgeous – Scissor Sisters
    Let Me Drown – Soundgarden
We Built This City – Starship
    Far Lip – Sum 41
Where The Streets Have No Name – U2
    Panama – Van Halen
Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
    Baba O’Riley – The Who

  62. ‘See How I Run’- Jessie Baylin. It’s just epic to run to that song.

Iron & Wine because it’s easy to lose myself in his stuff.

Kings of Leon or The Raconteurs if I’m feeing lazy.

  63. Dropkick Murhpys, M.I.A., System of a Down, Street Dogs…old No Doubt.

  64. I like to listen to Rage Against the Machine, SOAD or Wolfmother. Anything with heavy drums and a steady beat.

  65. “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” – Daft Punk.

That song gets me pumped and makes me feel like a total BAMF.

  66. Great suggestions! Too bad my train to MILF-dom has been derailed for now.

Here’s some tunes I had good luck with when the gettin’ was good:

    ‘B.O.B.’ Outkast
    ‘Dirt Off Your Shoulder’ Jay-Z
    ‘Makes Me Wonder’ Maroon 5
    ‘Bop Gun’ Ice Cube
    ‘Same In The End’
    ‘Superstar Punani’ and
    much, much more from Sublime.

  67. Use It by the New Pornographers.

    Gets me. Every time.

  68. I’m in the rock group too, I need songs that make me want to kick someone’s ass in order to get pumped up. The two that I always need to hear, no matter what, is Tool “Sober,” and Trapt “Headstrong.”

  69. I’ll listen to almost anything fast, hyper or with a good beat during a workout. A few of my favorites…
    Don’t Trust Me- 3oh3
    Woman- Wolfmother
    Chewing Gum- Annie
Dance or Die- Family Force 5
    Don’t Stop- Innerpartysystem
Shut Me Up- Mindless Self Indulgence
Heart In a Cage- The Strokes
Guilty As Chaged- Gym Class Heroes

  70. Definitely:

‘You’re the Best’ by Joe Esposito from the Karate Kid movie

‘Song for the Dumped’ by Ben Folds Five

They are both perfectly timed for my stride when I’m running. And the Karate Kid song is just an awesome pick-me-up when you hit the wall during a run.

  71. Anything by Rancid gets me going. Also, strangely, Ani Difranco–her lyrics distract me and give me that good anger to work off of.

  72. “Baby Elephant Walk” is very motivating if you’re trying to take of the pounds.

  73. Born To Slow by Crystal Method is definitely the best running song around.
Red Light Indicates Doors are secure by The Arctic Monkeys
    Insistor by Tapes & Tapes
Most of The Darkness, Guns & Roses

  74. Born *Too* Slow

  75. When I do fast cardio (i.e. jogging on the treadmill), I need fast, angry music for some reason! I also needed music that had lyrics that I know. So, I’ve come up with the following playlist:

    1) This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race/Fall Out Boy
    2) Evenflow/Pearl Jam
    3) Get Up, Get Out!/Godsmack
    4) Leave You Far Behind/Lunatic Calm
    5) Dragula(Hot Rod Herman Remix)/Rob Zombie
    6) Break Stuff/Limp Bizkit
    7) Rock is Dead/Marilyn Manson
    8) Whatever/Godsmack
    9) The Beautiful People/Marilyn Manson
    10) Pressure/Staind
    11) Smooth Criminal/Alien Ant Farm
    12) Excuse Me Mr./No Doubt
    13) C’Mon C’Mon/The Von Blondies
    14) There and Back Again/Chris Daughtry
    15) For You/Staind
    16) Nookie/Limp Bizkit
    17) Take It/Staind
    18) The Pretender/Foo Fighters
    19) Rollin/Limp Bizkit
    20) Front Row/Alanis Morissette

There are times I don’t necessarily want to be angry while working out, so I have a “fun” list that I sort through while not working out as fast/hard:

Again & Again/The Bird and the Bee
a few songs from Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake as well as Ani DiFranco, Rusted Root and Alanis Morissette

  76. “Push the Button” chemical brothers
“When the Dawgs Run” Blood diamond soundtrack
    “Robot Rock” Daft Punk
    “Do it Again” Chemical Brothers

  77. “Silent Shout” by The Knife

  78. Most of the album Psychopathia Sexualis by the Makers, particularly “(Are You on the Inside or the Outside of Your) Pants” and “Sharp Leather Walkin’ Shoes”, are excellent workout music. I have yet to convince anyone of this, despite prior efforts, but thought I’d give it a go here.

  79. I agree w/ gmuller – audiobooks are the way to go. They make the time fly by. But my favorite workout song is “The Perfect Drug” by NIN….makes me push myself just a little bit harder to keep up.

  80. I have no real right to say anything on this topic since it’s been a looooooooong time since I’ve done any good exercise, but there ARE songs that I simply cannot sit still through — hopefully not freaking out my fellow drivers too much as I do my carseat aerobics!

    Such as —
    Cult of Personality (Living Color)
    Kiss That Frog (Peter Gabriel)
    Evenflo (Pearl Jam)
    Right By Your Side (Eurythmics)
    Goody Two Shoes (Adam Ant)
More Human Than Human (White Zombie)
Wanna Be Starting Something (Michael Jackson)
    — hey I SAID it was a long time!

Also: I find Afro-Pop perfect for keeping up my energy while doing chores around the house. Place never would have gotten painted without Mahlathini & Mahotella Queens.

  81. m.i.a

    kanye’s workout plan

    girl talk

  82. When I work out I want hard hitting tunes, to help get the blood pumping. Anything with a strong drum beat, played at the right tempo works.

Die motha F***a Die – Dope
    Surfacing- Slip Knot
    Kaboom Kaboom – Marlyn Manson
    Diesel Power- Prodigy

  83. Joyful Joyful from Sister Act 2 gets me going on the treadmill

  84. Great post – I’m always looking for new songs to place on my running playlist and there were some good ones listed. Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, Kanye West and The Killers show up frequently. Right now my go-to songs would be:
“Steady As She Goes” – The Raconteurs
    “Train, Train” – Blackfoot
    “Black Betty” – Ram Jam
“Bleed it Out” – Linkin Park

  85. Even before I work out (on the way to the gym or while I’m changing) I have a few pump up songs:
“Hand in the Sky (Big Shot)” – Straylight Run
    “Carmina Buarana”
“And the Wicked Burnt Black” – As Tall As Lions
    “Paper Planes” – MIA
“Seven” – Sunny Day Real Estate
Mostly stuff that starts out slow and then builds up to the point that I’m full of energy.

Then when I actually start to work out I’ll throw on an old-school Punk playlist with a few more recent tracks.

  86. “Amazing” off of Kanye’s new album.

The tempo is perfect for running and the guy in the background even breathes with you!

  87. 1. absolutely (story of a girl) – 9 days
