Ditto BassMan! Why not add a famous dog fighter or a couple of cock fighters to the list. Calling it a "cultural" thing doesn't make it right.

@Bubba: It was mentioned in the first sentence that he excelled both as a bowler and a batsman. Subsequently, for the benefit of us Americans, pitching and batting was used so we could understand what bowling and batsmen are. And really, not that difficult to understand once you actually play it.

Akebono also fought in MMA for K-1 I believe, and is pretty famous in Japan for his Tag Team in All Japan Pro Wrestling with Keiji Mutoh. Americans may know him from the sumo match he had against the Big Show at Wrestlemania.

@ BassMan: I´m not personally a fan but I have had many arguments with fans and followers of the sport. Once you understand it, it actually does have a lot of history and art to it. Believe me, it´s a cultural thing. You wouldn´t understand it unless you grew up with it.

With respect to number 6:
You don't "pitch" in cricket you "bowl", they're not called "batters" but "batsmen".

Cricket - a noble sport that is inexorably difficult to understand.

I'm in charge of trivia night at my brother's bar. I will slip in a question about Americans in English soccer and see how many people know your John Harkes trick.

Around the time this issue came out, I had to do a report on an obscure historical person for my world history class. After reading this article I chose John Barton King, which won me the "most obscure" award, at least in this small Virginia high school classroom.

Thanks!
