The Science of Gift-Giving (and how Santa does it)

santa-claus-chimney.jpgAn article from a 1990 issue of Spy magazine that examines the physics of Santa’s toy delivery journey has been floating around the Internet for as long as I can remember. It’s ubiquity at a certain time of year sort of makes it the web version of the “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” editorial. If you haven’t seen it, here it is:

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn’t (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and, Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total – 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that’s 91.8 million homes. One presumes there’s at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding etc.

This means that Santa’s sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second – a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.

4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that “flying reindeer” (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload – not even counting the weight of the sleigh – to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison – this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.

5) 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance – this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts re-entering the earth’s atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each. In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

In conclusion – If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he’s dead now.

If, that’s a little depressing, then consider the alternate view of Larry Silverberg, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University. Silverberg posits that Santa is smart enough to know that traveling across all those millions of miles in one night is a fool’s errand. Instead, Santa relies on his advanced understanding of the space-time continuum (you gotta do something for kicks at the North Pole) to create what Silverberg calls “relativity clouds,” small rips in time that allow Santa to bounce around the world at his leisure, deposit himself right in people’s living rooms and deliver presents in nanoseconds.

And he doesn’t actually have to carry all those presents on the sleigh with him. Rather, at each house Santa uses nanotechnology to reverse-engineer toys, atom by atom, from soot, snow, cookies and other materials readily available to him.

If you were naughty this year and you’re getting the cold shoulder from Santa, Martin Nowak, director of the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard University, can explain the reasoning behind the presents from your friends and family. In the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Nowak and Sebastien Roch of the University of California, Berkeley examined phenomena they call “upstream reciprocity” – if someone is nice to you, the good feelings that are created may spur you to be nice to somebody else – and “network reciprocity” – being nice to people who are likely to be nice to someone else, with the assumption that a chain reaction will start and eventually someone will be nice to you. The scientists performed a mathematical analysis and calculated random chains of altruistic acts between people and found that a person who has been acted to kindly or been given a present may return the favor to several other people and create an “epidemic” of altruism.

  3. Ha! I was reading that and when I first saw the sentence “four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth” I thought it meant the Queen of England.

    I’m assuming it’s talking about a ship though?

  4. A friend of mine came up with some other calculations to help…

    Hello, Unfortunately, these calculations are vastly incorrect. First, for allof Eastern Europe (and even some households in North America) Santadelivers presents on Dec 6th (St Nicholas Day). Second, there are otherfaiths that don’t believe in Christmas (such as Jehovah’s Witnesses: 7.1million, Native americans, African tribes etc, we will say 10 million,but it is probably much more). Also a great number of Christians don’tcelebrate Christmas as well… again we will estimate low by saying 15%of Christians don’t celebrate Christmas. We are now at 306 millionalthough we are still assuming that all athesists celebrate Christmas. We are now down to 87 million households. I think it is unreasonable toassume that each one of the households have a good child. Let’s guessthat about 10% don’t…. down to 80 million households. Now the assumption that the households are evenly distributed is justsilly. 2/3 of the earth’s surface is water, Santa probably doesn’t goanywhere near the south pole, or over great lakes, etc. The averageworld popluation density is 33 people per square mile. So assuming 1.8parents and 3.5 childern per household that means 6.2 households persquare mile and hence Santa only has to cover an area of 12.9 millionsquare miles….. except that is including the entire yard, streets,office bulidings, etc. I suspect that Santa doesn’t make a lot of stopsat Football stadiums or Malls…. in fact he just has to cut directlyfrom one property to another… chimney to chminey or whatever. So, we have now reduced Santa’s distance to at most 1 million miles(including crossing the atlantic) and he has 62 hours to do this. Hence, he only has to move about 10 times the speed of sound which isslower than the space shuttle. Since Santa has been doing this a lotlonger (2000 years) than the we have been in space (50 years) it isquite reasonable to assume that he can do it faster. Next, since it is spread over 2 days he does not have to carry so manytoys…. and in fact, if he does it correctly, instead of heading acrossthe atlantic he can cut across the short way over the north pole and getreloaded. In fact, if he just tavels slightly faster than the spead ofthe space shuttle (5 miles/second), he has plenty of time to make a fewtrips to the North Pole to get reloaded.
