According to my handy Catholic Encyclopedia, both events are sometimes referred to as &quot;The Great Schism.&quot; The first is called The Great East-West Schism,&quot; while the Clementine schism is variously referred to as &quot;The Great Schism of the Western Church,&quot; or &quot;The Great Schism of the Papacy.&quot;</description>
