"An afterthought because: You probably can’t name another team in the National Lacrosse League."

Rochester Knighthawks, Philadelphia Wings, NY Titans, & Boston Blazers are the only ones I can remember, it's been a few years since I've been to a game. If you have a chance to catch an indoor lacrosse game, I'd definitely suggest you go - IMO, it's the best spectator sport there is!

Cael Sanderson finished his NCAA wrestling career at Iowa State with a 159-0 record. Obviously, never losing means also winning 4 consecutive NCAA titles.
Sports Illustrated ranks this as the second greatest sports achievement in college history (behind Jesse Owens's 4 world records in one day).

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte's football team has been undefeated since 1948....

...granted, we don't have a football team, but we've never lost!

Texas was the first undefeated women's basketball team in the NCAA era. That began in 1981-82. Prior to that, competition was governed by the AIAW. There was at least one undefeated team in the AIAW era, so Texas cannot be called the first undefeated women's basketball team.

The Browns are named after Paul Brown. The Stadium for the other team that Paul Brown helped create (The Cincinnati Bengals) is named after him (Paul Brown Stadium). Paul Brown was a great football man and Coach. Unfortunately for all of us Bengals Fans; his son, Mike Brown is an incompetent fool when it comes to football.

There are two versions of the story, but the more widely accepted version I found while researching for this article is that the Browns were named for Paul Brown -- despite what he claimed.

Perhaps embarrassed to have a team named after himself, Paul Brown publicly stated that the team was named for Joe Louis after the "Panthers" nickname fell through. Given that Joe Louis was born in Alabama and grew up in Detroit, there's little reason to believe that Cleveland fans would've submitted a nickname inspired by a legendary boxer with no major connection to the city.

If you take Paul Brown at his word, though, the first commenter is correct.

Penn State has had undefeated seasons under Joe Paterno in 1968, 1969, 1973, 1986, and 1994. In only one of those season (1986) was PSU named National Champion. If there's anyone know knows about underappreciated undefeated seasons, it's Joe Paterno.

Mike, do you have a source on that? I found this on the Pro Football Hall of Fame's website:

"The Cleveland All-America Football Conference franchise conducted a fan contest in 1945 to name the team. The most popular submission was 'Browns' in recognition of the team’s first coach and general manager Paul Brown, who was already a popular figure in Ohio sports. Brown at first vetoed the choice and the team selected from the contest entries the name “Panthers.” However, after an area businessman informed the team that he owned the rights to the name Cleveland Panthers, from an earlier failed football team, Brown rescinded his objection and agreed to the use of his name."

Contrary to popular belief (and wikipedia, which everyone seems to use as their reference these days), the Browns were NOT named after Paul Brown. They were actually named the "Brown Bombers" which was a reference to native son Joe Louis. It was shortened to the Browns a few years later.
