Stiletto Potato Peeler

A couple of events have occurred recently that illustrate the difference in the way men and women look at life -and gadgets. My new boyfriend is such a guy. He has every tool known to man, but he hangs sheets over his windows because he doesn’t know how to buy curtains. I’m quite the opposite.

220potatopeeler.jpgLast night he told me about a great deal he got on a case of notepads because the binding was defective and wouldn’t last after a couple of pages were torn off. His big idea was to drill a hole or two through the top, thread a small bolt through the  hole, and secure with a washer and nut. Then you could just tear the paper away from the bolt.
*
“Or,” I replied, “You could just throw them in a box.”
*
I think I took the wind out of his project. He saw the bolt idea as more fun.

Then there was the night we were preparing dinner. He asked if I had a potato peeler. No, I said, but I have plenty of knives. So he got in his car and went home to get his potato peeler! His daughters, my daughters, and I thought that was a little kooky. He returned with the coolest potato-peeling knife I’ve seen yet.

Yes, it’s a switchblade stiletto! When a guy sees this type of gadget, he wants it whether he’s ever peeled a potato in his life or not. There’s nothing dreary about peeling potatoes if you have a badass peeler! The more complex the gadget, the more alluring the task that goes along with it. Of course there are exceptions, but on average, the man with the coolest barbecue grill will want to cook out more often than the man with a dollar store hibachi. Viva la difference!

Unfortunately, I haven’t found the switchblade stiletto potato peeler for sale online yet. If you know a source, please let me know.

PS Since this was published, he let me know that this is a stiletto, not a switchblade device. I learn something new every day!

  1. I have one of these. My mom and I got several when we found them. Unfortunately (I suppose), I got it in Montreal. I don’t go to kitchen stores here in the states, but I imagine they might have them, too.

    Good luck!

  2. I can’t see the picture :(

And am I the only one who thought “high-heeled shoe” when I read the word stiletto? I am still trying to wrap my brain around peeling potatoes with a shoe heel…

  3. Diana, I thought high heeled shoe at first too.

Also the chopsticks in your drawer have a ridiculously bad translation on them, I believe, if they are the same ones I get in my dining hall at college.

  4. If you’ve ever watched someone try to peel potatoes with a knife who’s used to using a potato peeler, you’d understand why he went back for the peeler.

  5. oh how i want a high-heeled potato peeler now!

  6. It’s produced (or was produced) by Chef’n and it’s called “PopOut Peeler” from what I can see. Any place that lists it as a product, has it out of stock, with no ETA on restock. It’s on Amazon as well as a few other sites that way.

Here are the details from Amazon:
    -ASIN: B0002JESCK
    -Item model number: POP-105

and I didn’t see any mention of it on the Chef’n web site.

  7. I got mine a couple years ago at Walmart. I keep it in the car cause my friends and I like to scare people with it.

  8. It’s actually a OTF (out the front) switchblade, not a stiletto. Though the name stiletto is often used in modern day slang, the stiletto is a thin dagger made for stabbing.

  9. My husband and I saw one of these a few years ago at Wal-Mart. He wanted to buy it and I wouldn’t let him because we didn’t need it. He still brings it up every once in a while. Today he made me google and it and I found your video! His dream of owning one is still alive! thanks!! lol
