From time to time, publishers will send books to our business office in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Since we don’t typically run book reviews, we’re never exactly sure what to do with them. But Toby Maloney, who just happens to live upstairs from the office, had an idea. To say thanks to our loyal readers (and to reclaim some of that shelf space), he thought it would be nice to give these books away. So that’s exactly what we’re doing weekdays in January.
First on the list is Dry Manhattan: Prohibition in New York City, by Michael Lerner (Harvard University Press). It’s a new paperback that made the Washington Post Book World Top 100 Nonfiction Books of the Year.
How does one go about winning this intriguing paperback? Each day’s contest will be different until we get lazy and start repeating ourselves. Since we’re still in the new part of the New Year, let’s talk about resolutions. You may be vowing to eat less food and do more pull-ups, but those resolutions aren’t going to win you this book. We want your _flossiest resolutions – promising to visit the birthplaces of your five favorite Nobel Prize winners, or pledging to memorize pi to 314 decimal places. (Note: Your resolutions will have to be a whole lot better than those.) If you haven’t made a particularly _flossy new year’s resolution, now is the time.
We’ll name a winner tomorrow afternoon, then give away another book. And so on. Good luck!
My flossy resolution is to finish the four books I started (and abandoned) in 2008:
Ulysses
The Canterbury Tales
Beowulf
Paradise Lost
(My 2008 resolution was to re-read 4 great works of literature I’d first read in high school. Whoops.)

I resolve to track more temporal data points in my life to establish efficient patterns
I already track what I eat (cameraphone, excel), exercise (mini notebook, excel), and media usage (excel, online track program).
now that i am used to this type of tracking its time to establish time lines and vary activities.
Like how I am typing this when I should be working.
Gotta think of a control and an across board measure of efficiency.

My resolution is to actually succeed with my friend Irene at ALL of our resolutions for the past 2 years! We’re both trying to get ourselves completely out of debt (excepting house/car payments), to make use of our college educations, and to spend ALL of our time with the ones we love (our family, friends, and others) so that we can enjoy every minute of our newfound stability and freedom! And we’re both so close — just months away from our financial goals, working every day to find new uses for the things we know, and spending any time we can with all you wonderful people in the world!!!
In a funny twist of fate, my reCaptcha: $200 Irene

p.s. My other resolution this year is to use some of my newfound financial freedom to get a subscription to Mental Floss. I’ve been very lax about it, but I read it online everyday :)

My flossiest resolution for this year came up to me after reading Nature-Deficit Disorder, blog by Ransom Riggs. I’m a thinking about a good topic for our organization’s activity this January. This activity of aims to teach young children the importance of taking care of our environment. After reading the blog, I decided to build the concept from ecopsychology. I really love psychology(though it’s not my course) but I just recently found out how it can be connected to the environment. I’m really excited about it but I need first to read tons of books and other references. I hope I could execute this plan before February. :D

Part inspiration, part impulsive spending, at the tail end of 2008 I purchased a 76-key piano keyboard. . .
My _flossie resolution this year is to becom more musically inclined. I will learn how to play this as well as the other instruments in my house that I already own (accordian, guitar, bass, violin).
Piano is first on the list as I feel it would be a good refresher on reading sheet music (4 years of competitive chior, BOOYAH).
I have to add that my wonderful musically inclined boyfriend, who cannot sing to save his life, has expressed interest in recording whatever songs come out of this. Just for fun.

Any biblical, cultural, etc reference mentioned… ANALYZED and RE-ANALYZED to its ultimate conclusion.
In short, *I* will be the true ‘Know It All’… and I will not have to obsess for the final two seasons, knowing that I will have all the answers before – dare I say it? – even Damon Lindeloff, Carleton Cuse, or JJ Abrams…
And that, is what will make ‘ME’ leader of the island,
not Ben Linus/Locke/Jacob or whomever… BWA-HA HA HA!!!!!
Or – I could just get some therapy! ;-)
