Executive Orders were not numbered until the Department of State instituted a system in 1907, starting retroactively with an order issued by President Lincoln in October of 1862 establishing a provisional court in Louisiana and continuing forward from there.

Knowing this, I find it interesting that it took more than fifty years (1914) for us to reach Woodrow Wilson's Executive Order 1884, mentioned in the article; then, in barely twenty years, there were issued no less than another 5000 orders (FDR's EO 7034 establishing the WPA was issued in 1935). By 1948, only thirteen years later, a total of 10000 executive orders had been issued — although in fairness, it must be noted that historically many executive orders have been issued to amend or totally repeal prior EOs.

It has slowed down somewhat since. The most recent Executive Order, issued by President Obama less than two weeks ago, is number 13552 and deals with amendments to the manual for courts-martial — which means that only another 3500 EOs were issued over the past 60 years.

from what I've found, the regulations on the paper size in E.O. 5658 were actually 8 by 12 1/2 inches . . . a little more fancy that your average 8 1/2 by 11, maybe?

also, E.O. 11030 (the latest meta-E.O.) calls for paper "approximately 8 x 13 inches" . . . interesting

So... what happened to E.O. 2526? Surely Chinese people still aren't forbidden from the Panama Canal?

Great article i have been doing a project on executive orders in my government class specifically Executive Order 13438 but it was an interesting read and Truman only made that executive order in order to obtain the black vote which previously had been on the side of the republicans. But it worked out quite nicely.
