Lewen – I’m pretty sure they are two different wives in the pictures. His first wife was Barbara Jean Day, and he was married to her in the ’40s. His second wife was Barbara Barb (seriously) and he married her in the 50s. I think the beach picture is the first Barbara and the dinner picture is the second.

I wouldn’t call it a type as they are both photos of Barbara, one post engagement and one from 1949 after they were married.

I love the Addams Family. John Astin, who played Gomez in the original series also played another of my favourite charectors, Buddy, from Night Court. I’d love to see a TV-aholic entry on those two shows!

I was always told that he used College Hall (the original building of the University of Pennsylvania) as his inspiration. I linked to an image of it (not my own). But it sounds like there were several inspiring photos for Addams.

He was from Westfield, NJ and the actual house that inspired him is there.
