@Old Geezer - because the areas are centered on American-controlled islands and are thus subject to the 200 mile exclusion area.

A year or so ago I watched an hour long special on this expedition. I believe it was on Naked Earth on NatGeo. Quite an interesting show, as they had actual footage of the mission. If I remember correctly there was more than one occasion where bolts in the bathyscaphe busted and I think there was even some internal glass shattering.

On a side note, I couldn't help but think of the environmental concerns with using all of that gasoline for buoyancy.

Also, according to Wikipedia the Treiste was dismantled in 1963, but the pressure sphere was used in the Trieste II, and that was replaced in 1966. The pressure sphere is now on display in the Naval Historical Center in Washington D.C.

How is it that the POTUS is able to decide how the international waters of the Pacific Ocean can or cannot be used?

Wow. Those guys that went down to the trench floor have balls. Can you imagine not knowing if at any moment your sub is going to collapse on you? Also, there is a story in a story here. It seems to me the President is looking to be remembered for a little more than Iraq.
