Who do you think the USPS gets their operating capital from if not the US Congress? The USPS is supposed to be a self-sustaining entity from the sale of stamps and services but that’s a laugh. They are always going to Congress with their hand out…

What most people don’t realize is that issuing many different stamps helps postal services keep their costs down! Stamp collectors buy quantitiies of each new stamp and put then away, and the postal authorities get the income without having to provide any services (mail delivery) in return. Stamp “retention” profits far outweigh the costs of designing and printing different designs.

As a reformed smoker I still think that the removal of cigarettes from those portraits is silly.
But I also think that smokers are addicts and should be treated as such. I also think that drug addicts should not be treated as criminals.
It’s a weird world where marijuana is illegal and a substance containing a known poison like nicotine is legal.
How ’bout a stamp with a pot leaf on it?

In our local Vox Populi, a woman was whining about ‘taxpayers paying for all those cute stamp designs’. Excuse me, but the government doesn’t subsidize anything that the post office does. (Yet), tho it won’t surprise me if the PO asks for some bailout money from Uncle…

Similar to the Robert Johnson smoking ban, Bette Davis also had a cigarette removed from her commemorative stamp. The worst part is that her hand is held up with her fingers slightly parted, so it’s obvious she was holding a cigarette at one time. Now the hand just looks awkward. If it’s really such a problem for the USPS, maybe they should look for some different photos to use as a reference.
