Two years ago, at my high school’s graduation ceremony, my dear, old English teacher read a list of words that defined the graduating class, as suggested by the students. As she reached the end of the list, she read one final note card: “Promising. Colon-parenthesis.” I still don’t think she understands what was so funny.

No, it’s not a hoax. He was being sarcastic.

Sarcasm = funny
People who don’t get sarcasm = funnier!

TedTalks always has a funny segment like that. They had John Hodgman a while back. Google it.

I blame emoticons for people’s inability to recognize sarcasm or satire in a text/speech. Perhaps Matt should have just yelled “Semi-colon-hyphen-parenthesis!!!” at the end, for those who were unable to read between the lines.

It’s not a hoax. Here’s a link from his blog and the Macworld video where he refutes the challenges and explain how it was REALLY made (that it was real):

In that “It’s a Hoax” video someone linked to above, he makes outrageous, sarcastic claims. Does anyone really believe they filmed the weightless scene underwater? He also says that all the people dancing with him are animatronic puppets. It was clearly a joke taken out of hand. :P

The viral marketing “company” that supposedly sponsored it was called “Buzz!Brain,” which does not exist. :)

Anyone who actually watched the hoax video would understand the joke, but sadly the sensationalist headlines are all the gets through
