Remixing Kubrick
by Chris Higgins - January 21, 2009 - 9:37 AM

Us _floss bloggers are obsessed with Stanley Kubrick. And why not, with an endless stream of new Kubrick-related material hitting the web? Not a month goes by without some new bit of Kubricky goodness blessing my screen (most of it sourced from the excellent Coudal Partners “Stuff About Stanley Kubrick” Archive). This week, I thought I’d share a few choice Kubrick remix videos — in which web people take material from Kubrick’s films and make new, weird stuff from them. First, a re-cut of the trailer for Kubrick’s The Shining. In this cut, the movie becomes Shining, a touching family drama about parenthood. If you haven’t seen this, please, please, please take one-and-a-half minutes to watch:

Next up, blogger Jason Kottke remixes the famous Blue Danube scene from 2001, using a soundtrack of chickens clucking the Blue Danube waltz. The result is strangely beautiful in its silliness. (Kottke calls his mashup the Chicken Cordon Bleu Danube cut.)

And finally, the 2001 opening sequence (apes learning to use tools) remixed with LL Cool J and Beastie Boys songs:

  1. What a touching story Shining must be! ;-)

  2. That Shining clip is brilliant. I especially like the part where Jack is lovingly kissing the old lady he meets in the bathtub. Priceless!

  3. Yeah….I saw that Shining clip easily a year or more ago….Its still great today after a fresh viewing. My favorite part is the “I love it” line. I also love the “Solsbury Hill” song that ends the clip. So perfect for a nice touching family film.

  4. I hope this shining still has the creepy twins down the hall.

  5. Not quite the scene from Clockwork I was looking for, but this kinda works too!
