I've decided that the 20 extra pounds I'm carrying is my insurance policy for when the economy collapses and I can't just go to the grocery store for food. ;) *snerk*

Or how about the who cares if I'm fat diet? you know, the one that encourages butter and cream? yum. people always assume that because I'm a bigger than average woman who is ashamed of myself. I actually am comfortabe with my 210lbs, (on a 5'9" frame)and I certainly don't have to eat crappy food to placate other people's expections!

Here's a thought--portion control and exercise, anyone?

My mother lost a ton of weight when I was a little girl by following the "diabetic's diet" which is mostly portion control (and avoiding empty carbs and sugary foods) and by exercising more. We used to ride bikes and go for walks together.

Vegetarianism is good for you--if you do it right. And that means a hell of a lot of navy beans and tofu, because otherwise you'll gain a lot of carbs and actually gain weight. Also, consider eating fish. But no, it doesn't make your brain degrade, unless you're seriously losing protein. Pisco-lacto-vegetarians (but not vegans) actually live an average of 3.5 years longer than normal people. But the study is kind of slanted, since vegetarians tend to eat less and exercise more anyways.

My current diet is the college diet. It consists of stress, caffeine and not having any food in your dorm room.

I believe that the poet, Lord Byron, drank vinegar and ate only potatoes when he wanted to reduce.

I'll pass.

@Fruppi: I had to do one of those things for PT after a rotator cuff injury. It was hellishly painful, uggggh.

>>"So it stands to reason that dieting has been around just as long."

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. Being rich enough to be able to afford to eat was often shown in the past as pride in obesity. Dieting would stand to counter this show of wealth and status.
