Redneck geek here and the Apple commercial is on another level compared to most ads.

I got the gist of it when I was 8 and had obviously never read the book. Reading the book and then seeing the ad made it all the more powerful.

Not a yuppie by any definition of the word, but the Macintosh commercial was, and still is, an amazing piece of work.
And I’m not sure what you mean by nobody knowing what it was for. I’m pretty sure the text explaining that Apple was debuting its Macintosh computer clued most people in.
