Town Slogan Contest Winners!!
by Jason English - January 29, 2009 - 10:00 PM

Two weeks ago, we asked you to come up with new slogans for your towns. Over 350 entries and a dozen “what’s the delay?” emails later, we’re excited to announce three winners. But before that, let’s give a big round of applause to reader Jami Drost of Cleveland, who volunteered to mock up fake Welcome signs. (You can find out more about Jami and see some of her non-signage work at coroflot.com/jdrost.) To the winners…

1. Barnegat Light, New Jersey (from Josh)

2. Tombstone, Arizona (from Dan)

3. Effingham County, Georgia (from Caitlin)

We also have two runners-up, who will be receiving back issues of mental_floss magazine:
Macungie, Pennsylvania (from EMStoveken)

Houston, Texas (from Marc)

High fives all around. I’ll be emailing the winners and runners-up in the next day or two to arrange delivery of your prizes. I only have one copy of The Book of The Bizarre: Freaky Facts & Strange Stories, but I’ll see what else is on the bookshelf and we’ll work something out. Thanks again, Jami Drost!

A new book giveaway will be posted soon.

  1. Those were awesome! I live in Merced, CA and our very serious and normal motto is “Gateway to Yosemite”.

  2. love the welcome signs!

  3. I used to live in a place called World’s End, and a sign before the village said “Worlds End – Please Drive Carefully” – made me hoot every time.

  4. These are great! LOVE the Houston one, and the Barnagat Light one.

  5. These are hillarious. Extremely creative signage Jami, you did great work. My favorite is the one from my home town of Houston!

  6. Barnagat Light is the best!

San Bernardino, CA, which straddles a branch of the San Andres fault, used the motto “The City on the Move” during the 70′s.

  7. I live in San Pedro, CA. we have T-shirts in our town that read: “San Pedro, Where the ghetto meets the sea”. I guess its our unofficial town motto.

  8. The Macungie one is absolutely true. I lived not far from there, and the cops there all get their quotas.

  9. haha i live in macungie! it actually is indian for “feeding place of the bears” or “bear swamp.” but in all my life i’ve never seen a bear in macungie– i have however seen plenty o” speed traps!
