I’d say Illinois governors seem to have a penchant for crime. Five (possibly more) Illinois governors have been in trouble with the law. Rod Blagojevich, George Ryan, Otto Kerner, Dan Walker, and William Stratton.

I must say, “Vote for the Lizard, Not the Wizard” is pretty catchy.

I guess one of the morals of the story is beware of politicians from Illinois.

Tennessee governor Ray Blanton served time for selling liquor licenses, after he was out of office. I covered his run for congress in 1988.

Adri is correct about David Duke’s involvement.

The complete bumper sticker was “Vote For the Crook. It’s Important.” Another was “Vote for the Lizard, not the Wizard” referencing Duke’s past affiliation with the klan.

Well, look, the thing about Edwin Edwards and ‘vote for the crook’ is that the other option was David Duke. (google him, first link from the Anti Defamation League is worthwhile. Wikipedia has a good entry, too)

I wasn’t old enough to vote in 1991, but I remember my parents horrified choice– better a crook than a white supremacist, any day.
