We won’t win any points for originality with today’s Lunchtime Quiz – the ‘Name All 50 States’ game has been featured in an episode of Friends and at several English family holiday gatherings, among other places. But does that make it any easier? Let’s find out.
Take the Quiz: Name All 50 States
[And don't forget to come back and let us know which state(s) you missed.]
Yay, I got all but 5 before the time ran out.

It was just hard to remember which ones I had already put down. I went from northeast to west and just forgot Massachusetts. I kept thinking that I missed a midwest state. It is interesting to see the order people choose in different locations. For instance, I live in Maryland and decided to go east to west, but did someone in the California go west to east (not counting the people who just went in alphabetical order).

You could have made this a lot harder by looking for entries like “Hawai’i”
or “Commonwealth of Virginia” or “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations”

Side note regarding mnemonics: I thought someone might mention the way I learned to spell Mississippi: em-eye-crooked letter-crooked letter-eye-crooked letter-crooked letter-eye-humpback-humpback-eye.
And for the record, I lived in Massasschusetts at one point in my life and was thereby forced to remember how to spell it! (:

Judging from how many others know the song – I learned it in 1968 or 1969, my nieces learned it in the 1990’s, who knows when all the other flossers learned it – I’ll bet the composer has made a pretty penny from it.
And this isn’t the first time the song has come in handy for me…

I find the central states much more difficult … ones like Nebraska or Wyoming with no major cities, sport teams or landmarks. I mean seriously, what has Missouri done for you lately?
But Maryland has Baltimore and Annapolis, The Chesapeake Bay, The Orioles, The Ravens, The Wire, John Waters, Barry Levinson, John Hopkins, The Naval Academy, N.S.A., Michael Phelps… Maryland is the birthplace of the freaking Star Spangled Banner!!

Slow typing on a laptop took me 3:30 but they were in alphabetical order except for CO/CT where I got ahead of myself in the song lyrics.
I’m curious now, did anyone else learn the stupid lyrics set to the “Turkey in the Straw” tune instead of the obviously popular 50 Nifty? The intro begins with “When I was young I studied US geography.” The joy of this version was that after singing it at a normal tempo, you then got to repeat it in double-time. It’s indelibly seared into my gray matter, but it serves a more useful purpose than the one about the chemical elements.
Now there’s our next quiz!

I don’t know how I forgot Colorado, but the rest are forgettable states. Just not too popular I guess!!
Also, I don’t know how but I spelled Massachusetts right in one try.

Yeah!! I got all of them, with 55 seconds left!! What helped was that in 7th grade choir we sang a song that listed all of the states, and I remembered most of them from there (but had to remember a few on my own).

Sorry Jennifer, but Missouri DOES take offense! We DO have major sports teams (the Chiefs, the Rams, the Cardinals..baseball that is…) and landmarks like the ARCH! Anywho…I got all fifty with 55 seconds left, thanks to the song!

Funny to read these: I go to school in Massachusetts, am from New Hampshire, and my roommate’s from Iowa, so I didn’t have to worry about messing those ones up :P

I only missed Massachusetts… I thought of it earlier, as I was doing it geographically… but the spelling tripped me up, so I was going to come back to it… I finished with about 20 seconds left and 1 state, but couldn’t think of what I missed until time ran out and I saw it came back up and realized I never got back to it.

Pictured them geographically but forgot Nevada somehow. The song gets fuzzy for me at the N states. Off I go to google the state song.
Someone from Canada recently sang for me a song about the provinces, way shorter than the 50 states song.

Ended up here because I had just played this game myself (with no time limit), took FOREVER to come up with the fiftieth (Nebraska), and was curious to see what the least remembered state is. Has anyone gathered that statistic? I’d bet decent money that it’s either Nebraska, Maryland, or Delaware, but I’m from Canada so maybe my recall is weirdly skewed.
