Palimony suits - in which unmarried couples who lived together were held responsible for maintaining each other’s lifestyles – became all the rage during the 1980s and 1990s. Every tabloid newspaper was filled with stories of live-in girlfriends suing their boyfriends, live-in boyfriends suing their girlfriends, live-in boyfriends suing boyfriends, and so on.

Several examples came to mind when I read a news report about the recent death of attorney David Kagon, who represented Lee Marvin in the world’s first so-called palimony suit. The fact that Kagon won his client’s case didn’t stop other former “live-ins” from suing their exes, mind you, as you’ll see in today’s mental_floss lunchtime quiz.

  1. Is this honestly a mental_floss quiz? What self-respecting _floss reader would keep up on tabloid brouhaha? Shame, Kara Kovalchik, shame.

  2. Gretchen? Remember, Kara’s a TV-holic. She feels no shame at all for this quiz. Absolutely none.

Face it: if we didn’t read the tabloids, we’d have NO idea what was going on in the real world beyond the fact that we have a new president and a poor economic climate.

I say, more palimony for everyone! Who’s with me?
