Maybe if Rose wasn't such a douche, he'd already be in the hall.

Pete Rose bet on the Reds to win, not to lose. If he bet against them there would be a TON more outrage and he would probably be in jail for fixing games. As it is, the outrage is that he may have managed much differently in games he had money on than the games he did not.

Peter-
At the time or A-Rod's steroid use, those substances were not banned by MLB. On the other hand, betting on baseball by MLB personnel was most definitely forbidden when Rose bet against the Reds.

With our righteous hindsight, what ARod did was terrible. BUT, we were all happy to accept the steroid use at the time when those guys (McGuire, Sosa, Bonds and ARod) were smashing HRs. We all knew what was going on, we just decided to turn our attention to the long ball instead.

The funny thing about it is that steroids may have saved baseball (many credit the McGuire/Sosa HR race as bringing fans back to the game). And now may help destroy it.

Peter, I think most fans would agree with you that Rose should be reinstated and ushered directly into the hall, and I think it'll happen eventually since we don't know the extent of his gambling. Hopefully the next commish after Selig will do the right thing.

As for A-Rod, I'm speaking as Yankees fan who is very disappointed in him, but I don't think Selig wants to set that precedent. There are 103 other players on the 2003 list alone, and probably many more besides that. If everyone who was on PEDs was banned, the league would look terrible for allowing such a culture to exist for so many years.

Just want to make sure I'm clear on this. At most, Pete Rose created a POTENTIAL conflict of interest (assuming he bet the Reds to lose), but A-Rod ADMITTEDLY was taking illegal drugs that directly resulted in more home runs and RBIs for the Rangers (thus CERTAINLY, not potentially, influencing the outcomes of games). How is it that Pete Rose is banned buy A-Rod isn't? Yeah, that seems fair.

And yes, I grew up in Cincinnati in the 70s. But my favorite Red was always Johnny Bench.

reCaptcha: $300,000 Curti -- weird with that Winfield/Steinbrenner thing!
