I´ll second the inclusion of Katherine Swinford and John, Duke of Lancaster. They were lovers for years until they got married (after the death of his second wife). Their children were legally changed from bastards to legitimate... Amazing story...

What about Katherine Swynford and John, Duke of Lancaster? They have an affair for many, many years. Their offspring and descendants became major players in the English court; the Tudors are direct descendants of them.

Charles Lindbergh fathered 7 children by 3 different European women, 2 of them sisters. He visited 2 of these secret families in Germany for 17 years. "A few short-lived affairs" indeed. I find this a very fitting entry to an article about Great Loves. Does loving someone really override biological imperative? Really?

What about Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn? They were together for decades, and he died in her home. I can' t imagine what it must have been like for Ms. Hepburn to have to make that call to Mrs. Tracy...

There's another couple you forgot, especially if you're gonna talk about civil rights couples: Mildred Loving and Richard Loving, of the landmark case Loving V. Virginia, which overturned the ban on interracial marriage in the US.

They decided to marry in Washington D.C. when Mildred got pregnant at 18, but were arrested (in the middle of the night, from their own bed!) for living as man and wife. They both plead guilty, and were allowed to avoid a 1 year jail sentence, so long as they left the state of Virginia for 25 years and didn't return on visits together. Obviously, this didn't sit so well with them, and their case was eventually brought before the Supreme Court, who ruled in their favor in 1967.

After the decision, they lived pretty quietly with their three kids, until Richard died in a car accident in 1975. Mildred died in 2008.

Caesar was never "king of Rome". He was named "dictator in perpetuity" precisely because Rome at that time was a Republic, and the Roman people were proud of that fact. That's why there were two consuls, so there would never be one person with a large amount of power. Of course, Caesar severely disrupted the status quo, and Caesar Augustus, his successor, became emperor.

Also, historians have recently come to believe that Cleopatra was not "plain looking". A quick Wikipedia search would have provided a lot more credible information than the first entry of this article.

In addition to the point about Alix of Hesse, you can't call the woman who introduced Edward to Wallis Simpson "Lady Thelma Furness". She's Thelma, Lady Furness.
