These legs were made for walking… or not
by Mary - October 12, 2006 - 4:38 PM

300px-Legs.jpgWill! Mangesh! See what your glorification of the tall and willowy, and your mockery of the short and scrawny, has wrought:

China will crack down on a vast, growing and largely unregulated industry offering leg-lengthening surgery for people who think they are too short, state media have said. The operation involves breaking the patients’ legs and stretching them on a rack, and has led to several cases of disfigurement, the Xinhua news agency said, citing the health ministry. …

The surgical procedure, popular among young Chinese professionals who believe height will help them climb the career ladder, was developed in Russia to help patients with birth defects such as dwarfism.

You two should be ashamed of yourselves.

Or, y’know, at least these Chinese doctors should.

  1. Oww…

  2. Saw a Discovery Health show a while back about a person who underwent such a procedure for *real* medical reasons, to combat a growth-related birth defect.

The surgery was successful, but it was still very complex with a significant recovery period.

Can’t imagine how one could see the description of something looking vaguely like a medieval torture treatment and the words “height surgery without pain”, and think “yeah … that sounds about right.”

  3. Such a procedure also appears in the movie “Gattaca.” It did not look “without pain” there, either.
