I stopped taking the Oscars too seriously when Val Kilmer didn't even get nominated for Tombstone, but have to agree with Saving Private Ryan losing out.

@ The One...

No one cares about foreign movies; we just watch them because they typically show more nudity.

Let me get this straight — a rap group won an Academy Award for "Best Song"???

I'm ready, Jesus, take me now.

As a non-American I have to say that the mere existence of a category named "best foreign movie" (or sth. like that) borders on insolence. As if the real best movies were always from Hollywood, but come on, why don't we give all the other nations a chance (only in their own special category of course)... And then they broadcast the show worldwide and try to sell it as an international award. For me, the ones in Cannes, Venice and Berlin are much more important - because they are REALLY international.

Hows about D.D. Lewis losing out to Adrien Brody. Bill the Butcher might be one of the best acting jobs I have ever seen.

Saving Private Ryan - meh. I don't get the hysterics over it losing - I found it over-long and morally bankrupt. But maybe that's just me.

I think Michael Caine winning a second Oscar over Tom Cruise for "Magnolia" was also a surprise and perhaps a hidden message of Hollywood's actual opinion of Maverick...

But whatever - there's no logic to the Oscars. It's just Hollywood congratulating itself - it's not far off from a 7th grade student council vote.

The description of Sacheen Littlefeather is misleading. She IS a Native American, and though her birth name is Maria Cruz, she identified as Sacheen Littlefeather since well before the Oscar ceremony. http://www.sacheenlittlefeather.net/pages/1/index.htm

What we need is an after-the-fact awards show... Every year, present the big ones (actor, actress, director, film) for "Ten Years Ago", "Twenty Years Ago", etc... Then we'll see who SHOULD have won, based on their staying power, compared to the other films released that same year. (What films are people STILL watching after all this time?)
Saving Private Ryan would win, hands-down.
