Most incompetent people can’t recognize that they are incompetent. Doesn’t that make you just a little nervous?

  1. That teenage audio test – how can you not hear that? I’m 29 and it’s PAINFUL to my ears.

  2. Interesting; I’m 38 and I could hear the “teenager mosquito” thing.

  3. If I turn the volume up, I can hear it, and it hurts my ears! And I’m 46! Does that mean I’m just incredibly youthful. lol

  4. MY GOODNESS! That audio test makes me want to rip my eardrums out with a rusty spoon. The dog started whimpering as well.

  5. Maybe the teenager audio test is a sly ploy to get us to feel good about our youthfulness ;)

Also, rabbits? Shy and gentle? *snort* The grumpiest and most aggressive pets I’ve ever had were rabbits (barring one cat). They can be quite territorial and bad-tempered; one of my male rabbits never failed to grunt and thrust out with his front paws, a threat gesture, whenever I reached a hand in his cage.

  6. My friend linked me to another website that had several of the annoying tones, and I could only hear the ones for ages 50+! I’m 18!

I’m pretty frightened by a lot of peoples penmanship. I’ve been writing diaries since I was seven and been diagnosed with OCD, (“the most classic case I’ve ever seen” says my pdoc) which means my handwriting is impeccable. It makes my grandparents happy. I dread the day the art of handwriting is lost. It’s much too awesome!

    Recaptcha: 7) the tests

  7. wow. i heard the mosquito tone. as a musician, i always worry that i am damaging my hearing, playing in front of brass players and drum sets all of my life.

that was really annoying. i literally jumped.

so should i be happy that my hearing isn’t as bad as i thought it was? or can i just hear that one frequency but can’t hear a person talking to me in a noisy room? is that test even a valid test of hearing ability?

  8. while reading the incompetence article, all i kept thinking about was the American Idol contestants. lol!

  9. I did the audio test and it hurt my ears. I’m not a teenager anymore, though, I turned 20 a week ago. Hehe.

  10. I could hear the mosquito frequency, it didn’t bother me though. I’m 26.

  11. The mosquito frequency made me jump! It actually caused me pain! (I’m 27) I’ve always been accused of having overly sensitive ears though. My boyfriend hates it when I’m in the car with him because I always make him turn his music down. It hurts my ears otherwise!

  12. Yup, heard that sound and I’m 29. My ears are still ringing and it was on VERY briefly, like a couple of seconds.

  13. 32, and I heard the mosquito frequency for about 1.5 seconds before I pulled off the headphones. Ouch!

The “bells” that rang before and after each period in my high school actually had a high frequency like this that sounded about one minute before the bell actually rang. Teachers never understood why we all started packing up our stuff at the same time before the bell rang because they couldn’t hear the high freqency that we could.

  14. I think I will skip the mosquito frequency test. Everyone here seems to be able to hear it and hates it! I am sensitive to high frequency noises so I’m sure it would annoy me too. Perhaps the only thing I am looking forward to about getting older is not being able to hear those high-frequency noises, because I can hear something in my house at night and it drives me insane sometimes! My co-worker thinks it might be the electricity running through the walls. Anyone else able to hear that?

  15. I now have a headache. Everyone (kids 9- 11 -13, me – 38) could hear the high pitched whine except my husband (40), se he kept playing it over and over trying to hear it. It carries well, my oldest went into his room and came back out asking his dad to please stop, it was giving him a headache.

Ck, have you ever noticed sometimes you can hear telephone wires humming? My mom always told me it was from people making long distance calls (we were the only two in the family that could hear it)

  16. I’m 45 & clicked on the Audio test just as my eight year was walking into the room. I turned the speaker up all the way. I could barely hear it only if I put my ear up against the speaker. My eight year old immediately put her hands over her ears & complained about the loud noise.

  17. I think Candace explained it best… I bet it FADES with age, not like, disappears from your hearing from one day to the next. I could hear it, but it didn’t bother me by any means- I’m 23.
