Duff beer is unique to the Simpsons and nobody else can use it because they’ve copyrighted it. There was a case in Australia where someone was selling “Duff beer” and were ordered to stop. So you couldn’t use it in your own work unless you got (expensive) permission from the network to use it. I think most of these are referring to fictional brands that aren’t copyrighted to anyone, so any moviemaker can use them.

This is going to date me, but I think “555″ for phone exchange even dates back to the age of radio. When phones were rotary phones they had to have an exchange, in this case KLondike 5 that had numbers midway along the dial. Otherwise it would take forever for someone to call a number if it was a higher digit. But, you couldn’t have the number too low, or else it wouldn’t “sound right”
